Orientation metadata not followed for HEIF when opening

When portrait-oriented photos are brought in from A7IV, Affinity Photo reads opens it as if it were in landscape orientation, but keeps the rotation. So the bottom gets cropped off, and the right of the image gets a duplicate from the left of the image.

The HEIF attached was created by an A7IV. The attached JPEG is an export after being opened opened in Affinity Photo 2 on Mac OS in version 2.1.1 with only a LUT applied.

@EchowWelcome to the forums.

Just to confirm the .HIF you attached is the original file from camera? Would you be able to also provide one that is taken in landscape just so I may confirm in testing. As I can then log the issue with the developers.

Hi @Lee D,

FWIW, it opens using the correct orientation Pixelmator Pro, Apple Preview and every other app I've tried that supports the file format.

Affinity Designer 2.5.5 | Affinity Photo 2.5.5 | Affinity Publisher 2.5.5
MacBook Pro M3 Max, 36 GB Unified Memory, macOS Sonoma 14.6.1, Magic Mouse
HP ENVY x360, 8 GB RAM, AMD Ryzen 5 2500U, Windows 10 Home, Logitech Mouse

Yes. The HEIF is straight from camera.

3126 is one taken in landscape moments apart and does open correctly. The low contrast is due to the S-Log 3 picture profile.  0097 and 6765 are more examples of portrait that also open in landscape with duplicated overscan.

It might be relevant that the A7IV (ILCE-7M4) is on firmware version 2.0, but like Hangman said, the HEIF images open in the correct orientation in everything else.

Indeed. I also own an A7 IV and I'm also still encountering this issue now. Is there any news on if it will be fixed?

I don’t want to see any new features in future updates until basic bugs like these are resolved…. It’s not like Sony is some obscure camera brand……. 🤷‍♂️

Alas, there are certain new features that some users are desperately waiting for and having to wait for them until all "basic bugs" are fixed would seem a tad disrespectful to them. Better to have a mixture of new features and bug fixes rolling out on a regular cycle to keep "everyone" happy.

To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. If any of "my" posts are wrong or appear to be total b*ll*cks they are the ones generated by the AI. If correct they were probably mine. I apologise for any mistakes made by my AI - I'm sure it will improve with time.

Never a good idea to build on shaky foundation....
