Looking for a Retro Sci-fi Font

Screenshot below of a small part of the forum thread, and it does not say the Metropolis 1920 font is by Serif. Sample text in each font includes "Affinity by Serif":

Attached is a PDF of the web page that loads in Safari browser when I click on the provided link for Metropolis 1920 font. There Is absolutely no "spamvertising" or 'click bait' in the page on my Mac. Maybe you have malware on your computer. There is an unmissable (in my opinion) download button in the page.

Why does it mean I have malware on my computer if I click on a link and I'm presented with a clusterfreak of flashing rectangles all over my screen ? No I think what that is is a junk website

I looked at those examples and I see that "Affinity by Serif" is just there to illustrate the type - but nonetheless it's slightly misleading to be presenting the list of fonts like that - should have picked something else - at a first glance it can easily be misconstrued as being a font designed by Serif

Perhaps something more neutral like Hamburgefonstiv could have been used instead — but that can be misconstrued, too!

the site pushes you to envato market, the download button gives you a token bewicked-1 font if you deny access to envato market. I use adguard which rocks.

iMac 27" 2019 Ventura 13.6, iMac 27" Affinity Designer, Photo & Publisher V1 & V2, Adobe, Inkscape, Vectorstyler, Blender, C4D, Sketchup + more... XP-Pen Artist-22E, - iPad Pro 12.9 B|  Add a signature like this so system and app info always seen. Tagging is the gift that keeps on giving. Please consider adding tags to your post, not only does it help searching later on but it helps us, to give focused replies and is greatly appreciated by those that do reply, remember Affinity is for life not just Christmas.

I stopped adding the adblockers I'm very wary of any of these third party add-ons and think sometimes over time they can screw with your settings - rather just put up with the ads and if the page starts to looks too much like a Shanghai brothel then I just close and never go back

How?

I'm just reading Hamburgefonstiv and I've no idea what it means - in any context - it doesn't mislead me into thinking the font is by Serif though

I have a point - not so sure about you there though

How can it be misconstrued? Well, you might think it was something to do with hamburgers!

That’s exactly the point. Unlike ‘Affinity by Serif’ or any other collection of real words, it isn’t supposed to mean anything: it’s just a useful test ‘word’ for assessing the suitability of a font, since it contains all of the essential forms in a Latin alphabet.

I deliberately used the word "maybe" because, back when I used Windows, there were a few occasions when my machines became infected with malware which injected adverts and malicious links into web pages.

Never had an issue with AdGuard and used it for a number of years now, the alternative is Jens Laptop lol! (IT Crowd Reference) but each to their own. I also use Brave Browser which has "Shields" a kind of a built in ad-blocking system, it's pretty good at it too.

Anyway we digress, a lot of these "free" font sites use demo fonts, or give you some of the typefaces font family but not all of them, some fonts are clones of established fonts, so almost identical but not quite. So you take a punt and get some but not necessarily all of the typeface font options.

Do you really feel like you're making valid points there ?

The purpose of "Affinity by Serif" has been established Yes as I previously indicated - the wording threw me - there really isn't anything more to this and whatever analogy you are trying to make with hamburgers is just pointless bickering

I use some of the add-ons on my old computer but they're not coming anywhere this one

For a few letters it's easy enough also to make up my own variation on whatever fonts by just laying a few dots down so I'll probably do that and then I'm probably covered for copyright issues

I don’t think the word ‘bickering’ means what you think it means! You asked how Hamburgefonstiv could be misconstrued, and I merely attempted to answer that question. I shan’t bother in future.

Sure - Feel free to keep any other ridiculous arguments to yourself

Is the name of the company who runs this forum Hamburger ? Are there any companies that deal with design software or fonts called Hamburger ?

I suppose If they had written Hamburgefonstiv then maybe I might think it was the name of the designer company that designed the font ?

If you write something like "by" <Something> in example font text then it's not hard for anyone to assume whatever the <Something> is might be who designed the font !

What an absolutely pointless counter-argument to what I thought was a reasonable and valid point

I looked up Harmony bugles and found the following.

I know it is off-topic, but why restrict the opportunity to learn when a serendipitous opportunity arises?

I tried to rearrangle the letters so as to give something that is vegan compatible and the closest I managed to get was Harmonybugles, so I looked that up on the web and found some items. I shared as I hoped that some readers might be interested. Threads can be either strictly on topic or can meander where they go.

Well, actually, having noted your comment I was trying to think out how I might be able to advise you about retro Sci-Fi fonts by reading the whole thread.

One thing, there were once fonts supplied by Serif, as in the Serif business. Unlike the Affinity programs, programs such as PagePlus and DrawPlus had fonts bundled with them. Indeed I use some of them regularly, in particular Goudita SF, a rather lovely Venetian style font based on an original design used in Venice in the 1470s. But I think that Serif did not produce the fonts, they were bought-in.

Are you wanting lettering or symbols like for space invaders or both?

What sort of application do you have in mind please?

I searched on Bing for

space Invaders font

There seem to be some free ones but they may be personal use only.

So whether a tour poster counts as personal use only I don't know.
