If anyone knows any good places to look - I'm not sure about some of these free font websites

I found a good one on this thread which I'm going to hopefully post as plain text now and it will stop embedding some giant animated thumbnail !!!!!?

(just had to refresh the page three times and rewrite all this)

The thread is called Curated List of Free Commercial Use Fonts and sorry but this platform is refusing to let me copy a link in in a sensible form - so why don't I just post the link to the font on there called METROPOLIS 1920 by Serif

Metropolis 1920 - Download Free Font (befonts.com)

It just links to some spamvertising click bait website where I can't even see a link to download the font - only what looks like a link that is probably going to take me to some other garbage webpage I'd rather steer clear of

Is this really a Serif Font and if so is it available directly from Serif maybe ?

Blambot probably has a few options, and Google Fonts (particularly ‘display’ fonts) might offer some possibilities.

The Affinity apps support standard .otf and .ttf font files, so almost any font file you find should work, it doesn’t needs to be a ‘Serif font’ (.affonts are just Serif’s packaging of standard fonts exclusively for distribution to the Affinity apps via the Serif store). You may occasionally find that a standard font file doesn’t work as expected, but this is often down to the font itself rather than the Affinity apps. The only real caveat is that the Affinity apps do not currently support variable fonts, which are increasingly becoming far more common today.

FYI standard .otf and .ttf font files are installed on the desktop (macOS and Windows) through either a font manager app, such as Typeface or FontBase or via the methods provided by your operating system.

I am probably stating the obvious but Serif Font describes the characteristics of a font see Sans-serif / Serif differences :- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serif

It has nothing whatsoever to do with the company called Serif that makes Affinity products :- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serif_Europe

I figured that out yeah - not sure what "by Serif" means though on that thread I mentioned - how can a font be designed by the style or font category it's from ?

Badly worded

If you are having an issue with something in that forum topic, you should probably comment there, so the topic owner can try to fix the problem, or explain what you should do.

Also, wherever you decide to download your fonts from, make sure you get Static fonts, not Variable fonts. At Google Fonts, for example, the download will usually contain both kinds, and you need the ones from the Static folder for use with the Affinity applications.

If you go to https://www.dafont.com/theme.php?cat=303 you should find lots of Sci-Fi fonts.
Make sure that you check the licencing as some of the fonts aren’t totally free to use as much as you want, however you want.

However, if you want to make something that looks like it was made in the 1950’s then I would recommend looking at things that were made in the 1950’s.

For instance, I found this site https://www.filmsite.org/titles-creatures.html very useful when creating my own movie title mock-ups recently: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/182581-1950s-style-‘creature-feature’-movie-title-still-experiments/

Once you find something that looks good you can try and find something similar.

When you paste the link, you should see a popup message saying

Your link has been automatically embedded.   Display as a link instead

Click on ‘Display as a link instead’ to make it look like this:

Sometimes, when you post text containing a hyperlink and then edit the text, the hyperlink will change to an ‘embedded thumbnail’ automatically.
It can be a bit annoying at times when you only want to make a tiny edit but the whole thing ‘goes awry’.

Sure it will:

Just click on "Display as link instead" after pasting it, as mentioned above by@Alfred

You're not listening to me - I tried that - I just tried that again - it embeds it anyway - then when I click on it to delete it it opens up a new tab and takes me to the link - have to click on the X in the corner and then when I was doing that the screen was going all wonky and I had to refresh - like there was some dotted line I couldn't get rid off

Maybe it's the browser I'm using (Edge) but this is not me not knowing how to post a link

There's that and there's gaining information from trusted sources

I don't find that I trust the content Google returns to me after a search much these days - but it has it's uses

The question was however what are some safe sites to use not where to look for them - but thanks all the same 👍

Define safe sites, as in nowadays IT and the whole internet there's usually nowhere something like an absolute warranty of safetiness, despite whatever some sites or people might tell you here!

So all of these here, will also not give some attestation of full warranty or safetiness at all, but at least will give you some vague idea ...

I was hoping to find a degree of security from somewhere recommended by someone - but clearly I'll just have to take my chances

Check the sites as stated in my previous post, though that also doesn't tell much in terms of absolute safetiness, since your computer maybe has already be compromised in some intelligent manner without that you (or any protection software) have any clues about it.  - As one of Murphy's laws says... I'm astounded by how this thread went from somebody innocently asking for retro sci-fi font recommendations, to how to use the internet (forums, google, security, etc)?!

BTW in addition to my original comment above, there seems to be a number of sci-fi fonts available via Envato, which tends to be a pretty good (and trusted) resource for creative assets.

I'm going back to only coming here for bug reports only.

Easy explained, we already pointed the OP to sites which do contain and list a bunch of such SciFi fonts, so he can take a look which one might fulfill his needs. I also pointed to the usage of a search engine in order to find relevant SciFi fonts here. Then the OP throwed in keywords like "trusted" and "security" by using a search engine like Google and certain by it listed font sites etc. - So the OP brought in those security aspects and considerations here!

Sounds like we would need a screen recording to determine what is happening, if you're interested enough in resolving it to provide one.

Screenshot below of a small part of the forum thread, and it does not say the Metropolis 1920 font is by Serif. Sample text in each font includes "Affinity by Serif":

It just links to some spamvertising click bait website where I can't even see a link to download the font - only what looks like a link that is probably going to take me to some other garbage webpage I'd rather steer clear of

Attached is a PDF of the web page that loads in Safari browser when I click on the provided link for Metropolis 1920 font. There Is absolutely no "spamvertising" or 'click bait' in the page on my Mac. Maybe you have malware on your computer. There is an unmissable (in my opinion) download button in the page.
