I have three files: one  project.afbook and two files 01_pages.afpub and 02_pages.afpub, both containing footnotes.
I need the footnotes to be numbered consecutively.
In the footnotes panel I have set "Restart per" book.
In the book options menu I click "Update numbering\note numbers".
But in the second file the numbering remains at 1, 2, 3....

Where ist the solution?

I just tested it and it worked fine for me so I bet it's an issue with using custom instead of document-wide.

The Notes feature of Publisher 2 is amazing but the document-wide vs. custom options are confusing. It's not obvious when a note is formatted using the document-wide settings or custom settings.

I suggest going to one note, choosing Custom if not already selected, setting that note properly, then choosing Update Document Settings from Selected Footnote from the panel's menu. Then choose Revert All Footnotes to Document Settings from the panel menu.

You may need to repeat these steps in the other chapter file since document-wide in the context of a book might mean you have to do this for every chapter file - I didn't test that to see if it's true.

That should fix it. If not, you may need to share a document here for review.

Thank you:
After some trial and error, it suddenly worked. Your suggested solution was correct. "Restart per: Book" was not in the document settings correctly.
In fact, unfortunately, there is no help, no visible information about these levels. In general, I find the "styles" in the operation "awkward" ("hakelig" as we say in German.).

Numbering

  • Number format—choose the letters, numbers, or symbols used for note serialization.
  • Start numbering at—sets the starting index for note serialization. For example, for the number format *, †, ‡, …, setting this to 1 means begin with *, 2 means begin with †, and so on.
  • Restart every—sets whether note serialization resets to the first index after each Frame, Page, Story, Section, Documentor Book.

Notes for which Restart every is set to Book are numbered as a continuous series across all of a book's chapters. For example, if such notes in the first chapter are numbered 1 to 4, then numbering of the second chapter's notes would start from 5.
