change leading in publisher

Recommended Posts

this should be simple. I have a paragraph, and a style based on that paragraph.

I want to change the line spacing, in both the paragraph and the style

this should be so simple and clear that it should take less than 5 minutes.

in practice, not a clue after more than 5 minutes. can not find out how to change line spacing.

paragraph leading' alt up' or down has not even a little change of the selected text.

what am I missing?

When paragraph leading changes do not take effect, the cause is often either:

  • A Character Leading Override that is overriding the Paragraph settings. Or
  • Baseline Grid settings.

Interesting. What have you tried? Actually it is a quite simple task:

  1. Double click the text style name in the Text Style panel
  2. Click on "Paragraph" in the sidebar
  3. Edit the Leading.

thanks to everyone who helped !!

I selected the text, and tried to set the leading. seemed simple.

I think walter nailed it.
"When paragraph leading changes do not take effect, the cause is often either:

in publisher, there seem to be many conflicts between multiple settings.

it does seem if I select a text block that any settings I make should override any conflicts.

That is how it works, actually quite well. You "just" need to be aware about the hierarchy of the different parameter places within the UI to achieve the expected result even with "conflicting" settings. Thus the complexity of various options is a feature which increases the flexibility in complex projects. Below an example for Leading Override (orange) and different Baseline Grid settings.

thomaso:  disagree
when I select a block of text, and apply whatever to it, I expect it to be applied.

instead I have to go all over the document trying to find out where publisher may be conflicting with that I am doing.

it seems that if I select a block, and apply anything to it publisher should apply it.

other 'editors' are better behaved than publisher

You seem to refer to simpler text editor apps, with less options.

It is up to you to use in APub the paragraph leading only. This way you ensure that your selected values will always be obviously applied, without getting overridden by one of three baseline grid settings or a character leading override, – options that a simple text editor app possibly doesn't offer.

I can't speak to all other editors, but having used InDesign professionally for a long time (and Quark XPress before that), I can affirm that the way Affinity Publisher handles leading, and the hierarchy/overrides as mentioned above, is in line with industry standards.

Out of curiosity, what other editors handle this differently, and how?
