Good morning,

I am a novice in a trial Affinity version.  I mainly would like to edit existing files previously created for a website - such as simple date change. Im unsure how to do this or which file extensions are best to work with and how to import, edit and then export.  I attached a sample below which was a jpg and I managed to convert to a png.  Im not sure if this is the best file extension or how to proceed.  I have looked around to tutorials but not finding something thus far - any assistance or reference to where I should begin to learn this process would be helpful.  This is for a wordpress website.YardSale-1.png.2da1e08e7aaff5c6fc3c0a018fc875aa.png

Hi @pjs787 and welcome to the forums,

Ideally, you would want an original source vector file that could have been created in Illustrator, CorelDraw, Inkscape, Affinity Designer, etc., which would give you a layered editable file.

This file would then have been exported as a jpg for use on the website but in a jpg format gives you much less flexibility when editing the file.

The paint strokes in the uploaded image are pixel-based but the source text would be editable and very easy to change as would the Yard Sale text in terms of colour, size and position etc.,

The Yard Sale graphic is actually a Stock Library file available in all the usual Stock Libraries. The sites suggest the file is available in both jpg and vector formats though that can sometimes be misleading as many (though by no means all) so-called vectors on Stock Library sites are just jpg's exported as eps files...

As you are in the process of learning how to use Affinity software you could set this as a project to try and recreate using Affinity's toolset in Affinity Designer.

Unfortunately, converting from jpg to png isn't going to give you any advantage when it comes to trying to edit the file you have...

There are a few ways you can change the text. One of the easiest in this image is to add a white rectangle shape over the text and type in your new text

As regards file formats for websites, best to keep it simple, for now, until you learn some more

Use JPG format for photographs (i.e. those taken with a camera)

Use PNG format for graphic files (i.e. all other graphics on the website

Attached is your image with all the main text removed

Thank you both.

Hangman the info you gave me was extremely helpful.  It provided very good context of how to approach this situation and build my understanding - especially helpful was the comment was about starting with a vector source file and that it might be available.  I might be able to get the original source file but have been unsuccessful thus far.  The tip it was a stock file was helpful and although not in Canva which I am using until I get better at Affinity, I did find it in Shutter stock.

Carrl123 likewise your suggestion for the workaround and keeping it simple also much appreciated. Thank you also for the edit! I will give it a try to add some text to this file but I saved your version to my desktop and assume I need to import to Affinity but dont see it when I open the file and try to import from my desktop.  Is there a video on making it an asset I can use in Affinity?

You do not say what kind of change you old be making. I would suggest that your solution could be to use html and css.

  1. Set the image as the background to a div.
  2. Set the contents of the div to the text you want.
  3. Use css to set the size of the div and  position the text within the div.
  4. To change the text, it is just a matter of editing the html.

Thanks John,

To be clear I am guiding a website update for a local church - taking the lead in some overdue updates including revising an annual yard sale graphic- I have the graphic in wordpress media files ( jpg ) but last year's date. Another member created this graphic and I am attempting now to get the original vector source file now.  Good to know HTML and CSS is an option - I am not a coder but will keep in mind for potential future options!  Thanks again.
