dkenner Posted June 8, 2023 Posted June 8, 2023 Mostly just curious. When I [cmd+s] to save a file regularly (APub likes crashing at odd intervals) sometimes the dialog box with the progress bar pops up and shows it saving the file, most of the time it doesn't. Why? I would have thought that the behaviour would be consistent, always showing it, or never showing it. Again, just curious. Dixon Kenner MacbookAir, 8gb, latest MacOS, latest APub v2.1 Quote
MikeTO Posted June 8, 2023 Posted June 8, 2023 I've never seen a progress bar when saving from Publisher, saving is always instantaneous for me but I use only linked resources and my file never gets very big. Perhaps your project is sometimes surpassing a threshold for showing a progress meter. Apps often don't show a progress meter if they know it's going to be very quick so maybe Affinity has a threshold for this. You're saving the same document so you might think it should be the same every time but Affinity saves progressively, storing additional data after the end of the previous save, and doesn't try to reclaim unneeded space until a threshold is reached. I don't know what that threshold is but it's probably something like 30-50%. When it hits that threshold then it does the equivalent of Save As, compacting the file. I'm making these numbers up, but pretend for a moment that the threshold for showing the progress meter is 100MB and your file is normally 80MB. As you continue to save the file size grows to >100MB and then you start seeing the progress meter. Then it grows to 104MB which is 30% larger than 80MB and Publisher compacts it back down. Now it doesn't need to show the progress meter. Again, these numbers are all made up but I could imagine this is why you're only seeing it sometimes.
