The color picker in color panel picks totally wrong colors (desaturated) from pixel layers.

Hi @NotMyFault,

Looks like this is because the colour picker in the colour panel doesn't allow you to set a custom radius (nor does it follow the radius set on the colour picker tool), and instead samples from a 3x3 area, resulting in the desaturation shown in your recording due to multiple colours being sampled in a 3x3 radius. If you set and use the dedicated colour picker tool to Average (3x3) and then repeat this, the same desaturation can be observed due to the radius and minimal pixel distance between the colours.

The ability to change the radius on the colour panels picker would be a good feature request. 🙂

Or have the colour pixel radius automatically adapt depending on the zoom level. If you’re zoomed in and your cursor is over a single pixel, use a single pixel as the colour picker radius. Having to constantly change tool settings gets old quickly.

Hi Nathan,

is it possible to get the documentation in help file updated to include the fact of 3px radius?

It is quite surprising and inconsistent how the multiple color pickers act (which radius is used)

  • Fill tool: uses 1px (tested)
  • color panel: uses 3px (base on your reply, on iPad only). On Desktop, 1px is used!?!
  • color chooser from tools section:1px (only visible if 2 rows are configured)
  • Color picker tool: adjustable, default: 1x1px (tested)
  • BTW: on Desktop, all color pickers use 1px radius , so this is a platform discrepancy.

currently no information about radius is present:

That's a fair point, the notes could better reflect the colour picker's current behaviour in the colour panel. I'll log this with the docs team.

And please note

  • the platform discrepancy. On Desktop, all color pickers seem to use 1px radius.
  • In case you have transparent canvas, the color picker ignores those areas and averages only over opaque pixels.
