In my footnotes panel 'Document-wide' is greyed out sometimes, on some footnotes, sometimes always. This makes my entire 100-page document with nearly 100 footnotes unusable. This is a serious error. Is it connected to having experimented with Custom before Document-wide (I did reset that one to the original – there's not reset to default Screenshot attached. There is nothing in Help on this.

So, anyone in this group who can help? This is infuriating and causing extensive project delay.

As near as I can tell this occurs when we use Custom. At any time during any work on the notes. It gets stuck.

There is one way out that is useful for a few. That is to first Copy the note, then go to the note in the text and delete the note. Make certain the Document-wide button is pressed* and make a new note. Finally paste the info into the note.

If, as you said, you have many, then try toggling from Footnotes to Endnotes and back again to footnote. Text > Notes > Convert...

Caveats:

  • This will add pages to your document.
  • It may not work

* This can be difficult. By which I mean, making sure which button is pressed due to the horrid use of all flat buttons with no obvious indication of whether or not one is on.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.6
Affinity Designer 2.5.7 | Affinity Photo 2.5.7 | Affinity Publisher 2.5.7 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Hi Skokerg, I sent a reply to you yesterday, with file attached, but I can't see my wording any more. I'll try to reproduce it just now, but do let me know if you see it.

Basically I did lots of fixes using the Notes panel, undoing all the Custom notes using 'Revert Selected footnotes to Document Settings' in the three bar dropdown. From there I was able to change many settings using Document-wide, BUT...

When I try to change anything in Rules with Document-wide, Publisher crashes. So I can make no progress with the document. And deadlines lurk...

Yup I'm also getting this crash.  We did have another user report the same crash so this is something that's already logged with the Dev team.  It's related to the Pinned Images. If you go to all the pages that have footnotes and pinned images, unpin them, you can then alter the Rules without getting a crash.  I've updated that report with a link back to this thread so we can update when its been resolved.

Well, that's amazing! It works. I could never have thought of that, but it does make sense in that the pinned pics, I suppose, block something in the coding for good reason.

I usually don't leave pics in Word imports, but here just decided to keep them as placeholders to check against the final artwork. And when faced with the choice of pinning or not, rather arbitrarily, thinking n harm done.

I'm putting all this in for future users. You might also like to put in something about this in the Help manual. Viva Affinity support and this forum. And you!

I had some fun there. Changed to endnotes. Changed them back and formatting had gone wild. Tried the footnote Rules, and same crash. But the footnote formatting was back to before. Played with changing to sidenotes, but not a lot of fun there really. Anyhow all fixed now. Thanks for your input.

Incidentally, I only switched to Affinity once footnotes became available, i.e., version 2. For layout of academic work the lack of them is impossible. All other layout specialists would also have not crossed over due to this limitation in version 1, so now there is a great opportunity for Serif to promote version 2: providing the footnotes become easier to handle anyhow.
