Fravin Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 Well, I'm planning to buy a new laptop and decided to keep Windows as SO. My laptop of choice would have a AMD GPU, namely a 6800s. I read a long time ago that AMD GPUs used to be an issue with OpenCL acceleration. But I'm not sure if it's still a problem. Quote
v_kyr Posted May 29, 2023 Posted May 29, 2023 The forum's Frequently Asked Questions sections do tell for some GPU flavors, look & search through both of the subsections there. - Other than that, forum people who may have already some Notebook with a AMD 6800s GPU can tell you better here then. lphilpot Posted May 30, 2023 Posted May 30, 2023 I have had occasional lock-ups with my Acer laptop with its AMD Ryzen 7 5700U CPU and Radeon Vega (Lucienne) internal GPU when OpenCL is enabled. It's happened with Affinity Photo and with darktable, with the same symptoms for each: The screen stops responding and then it's covered in a small checkered / herringbone-ish pattern. At that point I have hold the power button and restart. Every time it's happened as been after I've repeatedly "wiggled" a slider back and forth, or toggled some effect over and over to compare results. Maybe a memory issue? Driver issue? Maybe, but when I updated with the AMD drivers I had issues with my USB dock. However, I've since learned that the dock is more than a little non-standard and lately it's been relegated to basically just a USB hub, so maybe I need to try the AMD drivers again. All that being said, I know nothing of GPUs and am out of date on the finer points of Windows desktop admin, so take what I'm saying with a grain of salt.
