What is the optimum file size for storage and viewing on screen only?

Recommended Posts

Using Tiff file @ 16bit RGB creates a huge file size.

I am storing picture files for viewing on screen only and not for printing.

Jpegs tend to loose resolution after each edit or save. The file size is much smaller!

Any suggestions on how to obtain best minimum file size for storage and viewing without loosing resolution?

Currently using AP as external editor in Aperture.

When using AP in Aperture, it copies & increases the file size of the selected pic for edit in AP and saves back to Aperture after flatten/save.

Thanks,

Saving image files at 16 bit depth is great for high resolution ones you might want to edit later but pointless for any kind of final output. That is because a) humans can only discern a few million shades of color & 8 bits is enough for that, & b) good luck finding a printer that can print more than a few million shades (at most) or a computer monitor that can display more than that. The advantage of storing images at the 16 bit depth is the algorithms used in editing can take advantage of the 'extra' color depth for more precise edits & fewer iterative rounding errors.

The tiff format can store a lot of extra stuff besides the main image, including multiple images at different resolutions & tons of metadata -- it can even encapsulate JPEGs & uncompressed images in one file. That can be very useful for some things but as you saw it can make for very large file sizes.

Like Stefano said, png is a good format for storage because its compression is non-lossy, although if you are sure you will never edit an image file again, don't need support for transparency, & only will view the file in the future on a computer screen, JPEG at 100% quality should be OK since there will be just barely discernible artifacts introduced at that setting.
