Arrows with a dogleg / bend

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I do most of my work in Affinity Photo, but this feels like a Designer question. (I have that too).

I'm redoing old Soviet space illustrations, translating as I go. I attach the one I am currently working on in case it helps. I think it would look better if I changed the arrows from straight to something with a bend in, probably with the tail horizontal,LK-Early-Shubin-HiRes-8bit-redo-captions-v2x.thumb.jpg.338b698d0c212ecb788d1201d2d53720.jpg to lead to the captions.

Now I found tutorials on curved arrows, but that's not what I'm after here. I want one with a bend in the middle, (or maybe not the actual centre!)

Can affinity handle this? If so, how please?

Thanks,

Nick

Possibly I misunderstand your question – since the answer appears rather obvious: just place the Node Tool on a selected line to curve it wherever you want.670312833_arrowsbend.jpg.0e911bcd66f439171f92d2a4a6ee990f.jpg

You can also easily make your own specific ones!

If in designer, draw a line with the pen too, set the width and end points of the arrow in the stroke dialog. Then with the node tool, just add a node where you want the bend to be. You can then move the head, tail and bend point as desired with the node tool.

Those arrows look great! The text looks as though a smaller font size has been used in lieu of proper small capital glyphs in the original font size, resulting in the regular capital letters and the ampersand looking bolder than the ‘small caps’ text, but that’s only a minor quibble.

An idea that always comes to my mind in infographics: it helps to show the way of an arrow if it gets more contrast to the background, e.g. by adding an additional outline. In AD you can simply add another stroke to the arrow style, in AP / APub you can use a layer effect, e.g. Outline:
