Font search (metal / lead type)

Recommended Posts

Does one of you know a font search source to find ancient lead / metal types? (I doubt it exists digitally)

I got 60 results at https://www.myfonts.com/pages/whatthefont but I don't look for a similar font but exactly that type.
At https://www.fontspring.com/matcherator I got an error.

I don't recall seeing the term* Lead or Metal typeface. I think you may be looking for Fraktur or Blackletter typefaces, at least that is what your example might be called in English.

* Serif, Sans Serif, Fraktur, Blackletter, Slab Serif, Cursive, Decorative, etc.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Thank you for correcting my semi-German English! – Is "lead" (as material) never used for these type of type? How would you call wooden blackletter?

However, I guess for such a search the wording doesn't matter because I either would search via an image upload or by certain design details of specific characters.

The only wooden type I ever had to hand set was huge, 48 point and up to 144. We used the term Display for it. Display as a term is used for the size being Large.

Going from memory I recall names for the sizes, Book, Pica, Primer (Long and Double), and Display. Honestly cannot recall the teeny tiny four point type's size name (Hated that stuff with a passion).

The relative width of the letters would change as the height changed, bigger point size meant narrower letters. And with some faces the glyph's overall shape would also change. It all had to do with legibility.

Have you tried this:

https://library.typographica.org/specimen-books-of-metal-wood-type

Good luck with its over 300 catalogues of metal and wood types, many of them pretty huge in size.

This German catalogue (https://archive.org/details/hauptprobeingedr00baue) alone has hundreds of types and ornaments, some "Karten-Scriften" a bit like what you are looking for:

A lovely resource...
