I was wondering, now I am using a vector object with a 50% opacity and multiply blend mode, but could I also use an Ellipse vector object to clip adjustment layers with?

The workflow is that I have symbols which should affect the background image. by darkening the portion of the symbol.

You can use vector shapes to clip or mask other objects.

It might get a bit more complex when combining blend modes and/or symbols as the actual sequence of the substeps might influence the result (clipping vs. blending) and you really need carefully test.

Other topics to consider:

  • combining multiple objects as mask is always AND, not OR

I never really managed to clip an adjustment layer with a vector object (e.g. apply levels to a star shape) and have it affect a layer outside the group (below the group), if you understand what I mean.

How have you got it structured in your layers stack? You should be able to use the shape as a mask by dragging the shape object on to the thumbnail of your adjustment to clip it, like the below example.

Or if the adjustment is nested into a group, you can clip the shape object on the thumbnail of the group to mask it, like in the example below.

A clipping object as mask needs to have a fillcolor and it needs to be dragged to the thumbnail.
