Layers window keeps resetting to top

Recommended Posts

When working with layers in osx, after I've deselected a layer and navigate away from the window and then return, the layers window has defaulted back to the top. If you're working with a lot of layers (who isn't?) this can become quite laborious having to go back down through all the layers to find the one you were working on. Whichever layer I was working on within the document/session, even if it's deselected, the layers window should remain *with that layer visible* just as I left it.

If I change to another document and return then the Layers panel is scrolled back to the top but if I change to another panel and back it's exactly where I left it. Are you seeing something different?

Staying in the same document I see no change; but if I open a different tab and return, the layers has snapped back to the top—even when the item in that layer is still selected.

Agreed, it shouldn't be scrolled to the top if a layer is selected.

There's a similar issue with grouped layers but I'll have to do more testing to figure it out. I'm forever losing my place in the list but I haven't figured out the sequence of events yet.

But even if it's not selected, IMO there's no reason to reset the window's contents. If I'm working in and around those layers, I'd like to stay there.

YES! I also recall something weird with the grouped layers or maybe it was adjustment/effect layers: one is medium grey the other is not-medium grey..?

Because the panel is shared between documents, Affinity needs to redraw it when you change tabs. It's just not keeping track of where it was when you change documents.

This doesn't make a lot of sense to me. One document might have 3 layers, another might have 30. If I'm switching between them it follows that I shouldn't have to go hunting for that section of the layers window each time. It's laborious.

Just as with history or zoom level or ruler setting, it should record the position of the layers for each document whether or not I have something selected. Definitely a missing feature.

I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just explaining why it is the way it is. When a document tab is activated the Layers panel is redrawn from scratch but it doesn't reset the scroll position to the active layer.

The same problem exists with every other panel that has a list of items such as Text Styles, Index, etc.

Yup. I could be wrong but I don't remember this happening in Photoshop/Illustrator. Text styles etc I can deal with—less context-specific—but layers are the bricks and mortar and can be very complex.

So devs!: please treat the layers panel as an extension of the each document's properties/edit state. For ongoing workflow, this is crucial.

You should post that to the Feature Requests section of the site if you want to make sure the developers see it.
