Marquee Selection Tools for Vectors in Designer

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am new to Affinity. I am using Designer 2 on Windows Desktop and I can't seem to find the marquee selection tools on the Designer Persona. I can see them in the Pixel Persona but I am trying to select vectors so I was wondering if there is a way to do it in the drawing/designer persona. Thanks!

Welcome to the forums @mgallegos

What are you trying to select via a marquee selection?
Are you trying to select multiple whole layers, or parts of one vector shape/curve, or parts of multiple vector curves/shapes, or the pixels in the layers, or something else?

The more details you can give us the better we can help (hopefully).

Hi Garry,

Thank you for the quick reply. I am working with some stock vector art. (please see the attached image) Each color is a separate curve and I am trying to select multiple curves at once so I can group them into individual flower bouquets as shown. This way I can move them around and manipulate them separately. I've done this a million times in AI files but can't seem to find the option here. Thanks again!

How are the various shapes/curves organised within the document?

Is each ‘flower arrangement’ in a group of its own, or all of the layers ungrouped, or, for example, are all the leaves in one group and all the flowers heads in another group, etc., or something else?

If we can see the Layers Panel (expanded as much as you can get) it might help us to see what you’ve got.

There are hundreds of separate shapes that make up each flower group. There are not grouped by color or by leaves or flower heads etc. I am trying to just group all of the curves/objects that belong to one flower in order to group them and move them around. Here's a screenshot of the layers panel. Hope it makes sense.

Thanks for that.

I think what you need is something like a Lasso Selection Tool which, unfortunately, the Affinity applications don’t have for layer selections (I’m pretty sure there have been requests).

The Node Tool has a Lasso mode but I don’t think that will work here.

The best I can think of at the moment is to use the Move Tool, with “Select object when intersects with selection marquee” switched ON in Preferences / Tools, to select the easiest-to-select arrangements and then move them so you can select the others more easily.

I don’t often need to do this sort of thing so someone else might have a better suggestion.

Thanks, yes. The Lasso selection tool is exactly what I am looking for. This is pretty straight forward in Adobe Illustrator. I wonder why is not included for vectors as a basic feature. Anyways.. thank you very much for the tips!
