jweitzel Posted May 5, 2023 Posted May 5, 2023 I hope this is just an error on my part: I just had to subsequently change the book block format of a finished paperback book from 125 to 130 mm wide. Of course I also changed (distributed the 5 mm on the left and right) the setting of the margins so that the type area remains the same. But all of this didn't quite work out. Now I was horrified to find out that with such changes there are no visible changes, because Publisher simply goes along and stretches the font in one dimension as the type area becomes wider until it "fits" again! Or am I wrong and have to look for an other parameter!? Unbelievable who came up with such a "trick"! That person may have no clue about typesetting books... GarryP Posted May 5, 2023 Posted May 5, 2023 When you changed the size of the spread did you have Rescale set in the Scaling section of the Document Setup dialog – see attached image? If so, have you tried to resize the spread with one of the Anchor options instead? Quote
jweitzel Posted May 5, 2023 Author Posted May 5, 2023 Thanks for that hint! The "scaling" aspect works in deed in a certain manner – but if I'm right, only for all left pages in a "facing" layout ... If the software (not only) worked "predictably" at this point, you go and change the size of the paper. All objects remain unchanged in their size etc. and - usually - keep their geometry relative to the anchor (which apparently is not offered when changing the layout) considering the definition of the margins of the left and right side respectively. So if I increase the size of a piece of paper and at the same time correctly adjust the margin measurements, I should - under foreseeable conditions - have a larger book block, but the type area correctly positioned mirror-invertedly retain the original size. Right? Thanks again Johannes Quote
GarryP Posted May 5, 2023 Posted May 5, 2023 Are you changing the dimensions of the Page or the Spread (options for this are in the Dimensions tab)? Are you Anchoring to the Page or Spread when you are resizing (options, as previously said, are in the Scaling tab)? What Anchor point are you using for the resize (options are in the Scaling tab, it’s the little ‘nine-block control’ thingy)? Can you give us both a before and after example – sample documents – of where it has done something you weren’t expecting with precise instructions so we can follow along and see if we get the same result as you? jweitzel Posted May 5, 2023 Author Posted May 5, 2023 I'll try to help But this needs some time. The situation is a little delicat, because that book is *about* to be published,so that I do not want to give the text out of hand. In the meantime I have adjusted all text frames of the textflow manually. I have to finish that job and deliver a PDF .... I'll return. Johannes Quote
GarryP Posted May 5, 2023 Posted May 5, 2023 Totally understandable. Just give us what you can when you have the time. (It doesn’t have to be a complex example, just something where the problem can be seen inspected.) Quote
jweitzel Posted May 5, 2023 Author Posted May 5, 2023 Now I have built up 2 sample files. "specimen (before) 125x190mm.afpub" is just the layout with the (wrong) 125 x 190 mm, facing pages, text flow. (paperback) "specimen (after) 130x190mm.afpub" is the "same" book after modification to (corrects) 130 x 190 mm, etc. The task would be: open the "before" file and change the layout to 130 x 190 mm via "document properties" - with the type area and line breaks unchanged! The horizontal margins "before" are: 10 mm, 17 mm Because the new layout has 5 mm more width, I extend the horizontal margins to 13 mm (= 10+3), 19 mm (17+2). In the meantime I've found that I'm not entirely clear on the technique of how to insert a large amount of text from the clipboard into an empty layout. Say: How do "automatic text frames" work? Perhaps this is the cause of my difficulties. I followed a tutorial on Youtube, but not from Serif. (Any help and professional knowledge will be appreciated) Johannes specimen before 125x190mm.afpub.zip specimen after 130x190mm.afpub.zip Quote
