amanuensis Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 Hi - I have imported 2 high res Images for an advertisement a full size A4 image on an A4 page and a high res logo - both were produced using Photoshop and both are 300dpi. Yet when I place them both in Affinity Publisher the pre-flight tells me that they are low res - having sent the file to the printer they came back with the same result. Any ideas as to why 2 x high res placed images in Affinity Publisher should import as low res? Quote
GarryP Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 There is no ‘image import’ functionality in Publisher, as such. We can: paste images from the clipboard, or; we can Place (via menu “File → Place” or the relevant tool) images from the filing system into documents, or; we can drag images from the filing system explorer/finder to the document, or; we can add an image from the filing system into a Picture Frame. (There may be other ways that have slipped my mind.) Which are you doing? Quote

GarryP Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 Thanks for the extra information. The answer is important, especially because copy/paste sometimes has a tendency to reduce the DPI of the image – apparently something to do with the clipboard, not the Affinity software (it was discussed elsewhere in the forums if you want to look for it). Is your document set to 300DPI? Check using menu “File → Document Setup…” and then look at the Document section of the dialog. Quote

Are both images A4 size? If they are small and you are scaling them up then their placed resolution will be lower than 300 dpi. A one inch square image with a resolution of 300 dpi stretched to fill a 3 inch square will have a placed resolution of 100 dpi. amanuensis Posted April 24, 2023 Author Posted April 24, 2023 Thanks for your reply - It is set to 300dpi - it look ok on screen it's after the PDF export that it reveals itself, as well as in preflight. Quote

The background image is A4 and at 300dpi in Photoshop before it is placed into Publisher - the logo is imported at 300dpi and remains the same size in Publisher. Quote

Staff NathanC Posted April 25, 2023 Staff Posted April 25, 2023 Hi @amanuensis, Could you possibly provide us with the original file that has been saved as a package, so we can also look at your placed resources? This can be done via file > Save as Package > Save to an empty folder > compress the folder to a ZIP. I have provided a private upload link below if you don't wish to publicly share the file. https://www.dropbox.com/request/0EozzbpyAxEU261dYnTt Many thanks Quote
Staff NathanC Posted April 25, 2023 Staff Posted April 25, 2023 Hi @amanuensis, Your placed background .TIFF appears to originally be 2585x2895 @ 600DPI according to the resource manager, which is placed at 300DPI in line with your document DPI and at the same pixel resolution for 100% scale, since you have scaled the image up to 125% to exceed the page boundaries (the page appears to be 216x303mm, not A4?) this has then reduced the DPI of the image to 240 and reported this on the preflight panel. Your other logo image has been placed at 1081 x 315 @ 300DPI but has then been scaled up to 108%, which results in the image reporting a lower DPI of 278, this can be checked along the context toolbar with the image layer(s) selected. It looks like a few things aren't matching up in terms of sizing, which has then resulted in the image(s) being upscaled which reduces the DPI of the content and is reported as such on Preflight.
