I’ve been trying to figure out how to create seamless patterns in pixel persona. So far I have not been able to find any information on how to do this. I’ve been able to create vector-based seamless repeats. I previously worked in GIMP and was able to create seamless raster patterns using offset of workspace. Tutorials I find online suggest that this same method is available in Affinity Photo. Is there a way to do this in Designer/Pixel Persona? Thank you!

Unless you have Affinity Photo you have no access to the Affine Filter which is what I think you are referring to to offset the pattern. You can select File > Edit in Photo... but you need to have Affinity Photo installed.

Hi @margaretladner and welcome

Yes, you could create patterns in the pixel persona. But this is much more cumbersome than with Affinity Photo, because here you can create a pattern layer where you practically have a live preview of the placed objects. With pixel persona you have to enter all distances and positions of the objects manually with no visual control over the right placement.

You may be able to use symbols containing a rectangle and a pixel layer.

  • add second artboard
  • mark the pixel layer with color tag
  • add 4 aligned ins trances of symbol
  • select same, object pixel layer
  • now use paintbrush (affects all instances)
  • the blue / yellow / red circles at the edges / corners show that this method creates seamless tiles

I think, what you want to do (at least if you want to create seamless patterns out off existing textures) will not work in Designer, because there is no Clone Tool - even in the Pixel Persona. It will not be a problem in Affinity Photo. There is also a feature to make your patterns endless. But not in Designer.

@margaretladner. There is a way to make repeating patterns in Designer using both vector and pixel elements, or both simultaneously, but there are a number of statements in this thread that I do not understand.  So, the information I offer might not be quite what you’re looking for.

I have attached some examples created with Designer 1; these are pairs of tiles and the resulting tiled patterns.  They are experiments, and may not have any artistic merit.  They were created using a custom pixel brush in Designer 1, and you can easily do the same in Designer 2.  There is some information about my approach to making these examples in this thread

If that does not put you off, reply and I’ll provide more information.
