Is this the only preview of what is to be printed in any of the Affinity suite or have I missed something?  I really don't wish to harp back, but there used to be a much better print size preview and ability in PagePlus. I am on a desktop monitor and I really struggle to see the anticipated output.

That is the only print preview, unless your printer offers one. My Epson printers, for example, have a print preview setting that I can enable from the Affinity print dialog by clicking on Properties.

The other thing about the print dialog that disappoints me is the lack of sizing options.  Even Photoshop CS2 (i.e. from the dawn of time practically) is superior by allowing you to specify the absolute dimensions of the print, that than just a scale percentage.

Hmm, I didn't know that was possible.  'Custom' as a paper size was not listed as an option but has now appeared as one after I typed in 'Custom'.  That's hardly intuitive.

It's still way short of the clarity and ease of Photoshop CS2's print with preview dialog:
