Designer macOS M1 Max — Inefficient CPU Core Utilization

I'm working with 10s of thousands of symbols, each with only 2 nodes, and it seems like I get the spinning wheel ALL the time, but when I check Activity Monitor, CPU core utilization is very low.... can this be tuned? I get a lot of this:
