If you draw a rectangle QS then convert it to curves, then cut one of the corner nodes how do you select the node that would be on the cut end of the horizontal edge? It sees to default to the vertical edge. The only way I sect the horizontal node was the move the vertical node sideways thus exposing the horizontal node. However I don't want to move the vertical edge as it must stay in alignment with another object. To get round it I had to move a guide to the position of the node, move the node, then select the other node I wanted to move, then move the first node back to the guide.
