Tutorials Difficult to Follow

aren´t all of these topics covered by the free Affinity Videos on Vimeo? I just looked at the example videos on lynda and didn´t see a certain benefit....

at this place I´d like to give a HUGE thanks to all the kind guys who produce free tutorials and even share their approaches (source files/ speed art) also in the share your work section! There are so many awesome resources out there if one just takes a bit time.

I assume that the tutorial instructors are working from a script (at least I hope they are).  Why not include a down loadable link to the script along with the video.  When I find a video that peaks my interest I frequently start/stop the tutorial in order to capture the instructions being presented.

I personally take notes for techniques I like which are only a few lines for most videos (and IMO there is really no way around this effort of a personal collection), just to remember what the technique was about. I may be posting them here at some point but they´re quite compressed and thus it would be hard for others to know what I mean. And I´d like to use APub to properly layout the stuff, also helpful screenshots from the forum etc., I´m collecting them all.

But since APub has some heavy delay...I´m still a bit in standby mode regarding these plans.

Tutorials I dislike are speed tutorials with 2000BPM techno music in the background with no talking whatsoever

Tutorials I dislike, regardless of the speed, are the ones with plenty of talking that you can't hear properly because of the 2000BPM techno music in the background!

Thank you Ronny.
I have to say.. sorry if I offend you, it's not my intention, -but I think you talk very much and I'm waiting a long time for you to do what you are talking about.

This is maybe due to me not being English, so I like the video format that doesn't include so much talking. (I'm not talking about speedpaint)

I think this is worth considering, since the Internet isn't just USA and England.

I think you are thorough and that you see what a newbee needs to know. That's good!
I wish you good luck with your teaching.

You are welcome Madame. And I am not offended at all. I understand that my style of teaching is not for everyone. Ther isn't one way to teach any topic or subject. So, it is totally ok and understandable if my talking style does not work for you. The way I teach is as if I was sitting with a friend showing you how something work explaining what I'm doing along with the why I am doing it. When you have a friend showing how to do something you might interject and as why did you do that and since online video is a format where you can't do that. I try to think of those things and by doing so results in a lot of talking to support what might not be going on the screen.

You said "you like videos that don't include so much talking"  because you are not an English speaker then yes it very obvious that my video will not work for you and that is perfectly fine and not offensive to me. I can't please everyone, unfortunately. :(

This course is called Essential Training. It is for beginners or someone who has little experience with this application and in some cases, they may have zero creative design experience so the additional talking is to give additional support to the questions a total newbie might have beyond just the how to do it. If you are an advanced user you might find a tip, technique, function or approach to a problem that you might not have thought of that may prove valuable in your own process so in this case you are just watching the video to learn a tip or two or maybe a feature you did not know existed within the application.

Thank you so much for your respected and honest comment as well as your kind words of support. I will keep you comment in mind when I produce future content. Trust me when I say I don't do this for vanity I do it because I really do care and want to share the knowledge and approach in a way I wish someone would have shared with me when I was learning how to do this stuff.

Hopefully I did not offend you with my answer. Thank You Madame!

There always room for more information and a point of view Different people have different ways of consuming information as well as there are different teaching styles. Some might say I can just read the manual why would I bother watching any of these videos. I like to hope that people who take my course  learn a few things beyond just the tool and feature. I also hope the samples and content I provide are different from the projects and samples anywhere else. If not would have some legal problems with my employer lol.

Hello Ronnie,

Is your lynda.com course different, improved, or similar to the one you did for udemy?

I just realized this might sound like I think the udemy course was some how not well done. That is not what I meant to imply. I just wondered if there was new content in the lynda.com course.

Jmac,

The course on lynda.com is all new content the sample content is all different the only similarity is these are both for the beginners so most of the features covered are similar. There are things I cover in the lynda course that I did not cover in Udemy course because those 1.4 features twere not available at the time of recording. when I create the Udemy course (1yr ago). They are two different education platform. and in my Udemy course, I have a support forum and can add additional video at will, which allows me to be responsive and more engaged wit my students. This functionality does not exist in the Lynda platform. If you take either of these courses you get the same solid foundation, but with entirely different content. Did that answer your question?

Ronnie,

Yes, thanks. I have the udemy course. But haven't looked at it in awhile. I'll check for anything you may have added. I renew my membership to lynda.com now and then. Next time I'll be sure to go thru your course there as well.

  • 1 year later...

Hi to all,

I have been banging on about videos for beginners for over a year now. I had some response but no one is picking up the baton! All beginners (I am one) need complete workflows from start to finish. Then you can find a video for a specific tool or feature. I am frustrated as I have searched youtube and seen most of the videos that have been produced (and even bought two videos), but I haven't found what I need. Its good to see there are more beginners like me who have the same frustrations. Laminar has just brought out an update called Luminar 2018 and within a couple of days there were many videos on youtube. Anthony Morganti has done a complete series already and has started another series. What concerns me is that Serif hasn't managed to get any of the great instructors on youtube on board to promote AP. I really think that beginners are NOT being catered for by Serif or AP, but as I have said before we are your best sales people! Keep us happy and we will promote your products. Come on Serif and AP start giving us the videos we all need so desperately to learn and use AP to its full potential.

Have you looked at the videos that Simon ('drippy cat') mentioned in the post before yours? There are also lots of YouTube videos from Isabel Aracama and Carl Surry (to name but two) offering useful tips and beginners' guides.

Oh, sorry! I didn’t pick up on that detail. However, the two apps do have a lot in common, so you might still glean some useful information from the AD videos.

Just my 2 cents, but one can't expect to instantly learn all the techniques is this software.  It takes doing something at least 12 times before there is some retention of new information and even then, one must go back and review again and again.

That is my experience as even now I am going back to look at Affinity videos for refreshing in combination with the help pages.  Each time the knowledge gets more set in my mind.  There are still too many things that I need to discover and master, i.e. Equations, but if I looked at the whole all at once, I would feel overwhelmed and give up.  Little steps, lead to more.

In the beginning I would play the videos over and over, use the scroll bar to move to a certain position to play again and again, then practice.

There is no quick way of learning, but one must find their way of learning and then practice.

The new Affinity Photo Book looks really good.  I might consider buying this one because being able to write in a real book is my way of learning.  Sorry to all those that created this awesome book, but that is the way I like to learn.

Tip for beginners : Don't rush through all tutorials (lessons) as you would do with TV series.  You can (have to) pause/rewind/replay videos at will until you understand well what is going on. Don't forget to take some notes and then practice multiple times what you have just learned using similar pictures of yours. Mastering what's going on in a 10 minutes tutorial may take hours.

Hi mikep,

Have you checked these from the Official Affinity Photo tutorials:

Hi Manuel,

I remember recently we had a conversation about the Affinity photo book that was due for realise. You said that when it is realised you would put in on line. I found out yesterday that it has been realised and I ordered a copy. I have looked on the forum today and there is no mention that it is for sale. I think the forum site needs an update, there is very little current news but lots of news that in all honesty needs deleting as it is so old. Also there doses not seem to be a way of searching for a particular item. I know I complain a lot but if Affinity photo is to complete with Photoshop it doses need to step up a gear. Mikep
