Designer.

I add a vector item to a document from the Stock panel or by using the Place Image Tool.

If I double click on the item, it opens in an <Embedded> tab where I can edit it remotely from the main document.

Can this be done with any selected object(s) or layer in the main document and if not, would it be a useful feature to have?

Only Embedded or Linked files.

From my own point of view it would be a useful feature to have, basically allowing one to solely concentrate on specific items or layer without the surrounding clutter offering a distraction.

Isolate layers? (Alt+click in Layers panel. Unfortunately, the isolation is not permanent, which has been requested many times)

Layers or selected objects. The basic idea is to replicate what already exists with embedded vector items, allowing their editing to be done in a separate tab whilst keeping them within the main document.
