I can't figure out the Move tool. I select a rectangular area with the marquee tool, then click on move and I don't see any handles. When I drag from the area where I think the invisible handles might be, the marquee stays put and the whole image moves.

This is beyond frustrating. I'm a software engineer with 40 years of experience. I used Photoshop daily for 15 years. I used the older Affinity Photo, but only occasionally, then upgraded to the new one. It shouldn't be this hard to figure out select, move, stretch.  There must be a place to turn on the handles, but I've spent an embarrassing amount of time on this and I can't find it.

Thanks.

You need to have an empty Pixel layer selected in the Layers panel. Empty because otherwise you'll drag the pixels in the selected area to a new location.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.6
Affinity Designer 2.6.0 | Affinity Photo 2.6.0 | Affinity Publisher 2.6.0 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Sounds like you are working with a placed Image object. You cannot edit the pixels of an Image object. If you apply Rasterise command to it, you'll get a Pixel object and then transform handles will appear around the selection marquee.
