I can't even open these CR3 files - I get an error message "The file type is not supported".

This is with Affinity 2.0.4 on Windows 11.

The Microsoft Raw Image Extension is also installed, but this also does not display thumbnails of CR3 files in File Explorer, only thumbnails of CR2 files.

Sample CR3 file attached.

These RAW files are displayed in IDimager's Photo Supreme application, so why not in Affinity?

Hi @Gcoupe,

Thanks for your report!

I can confirm that I'm seeing the same error message with your file, however I have downloaded a sample RAW file from here and this has opened as expected within Affinity Photo -

Can you please confirm for me, do you have RAW compression enabled on your camera? Unfortunately Affinity is unable to import compressed RAW CR3 files, which may explain the error you're seeing & why the above RAW loads correctly.

When loading your RAW files in IDImager's Photo Supreme, the embedded JPEG will be used to display the image, and not the RAW data itself. When opening the image in Affinity, we use the RAW data and not the embedded JPEG, and as above if this RAW data is compressed the Affinity apps will be unable to read this.

I hope this helps :)

Well, as far as I can see I am NOT using RAW compression? Please see the photo of the image settings on the camera...

I might add that Photo Supreme is able to open the CR3 file for simple developing - it's just that PS is more a DAM application than a photo editor application, so I need to use Affinity for this.

Many thanks for checking that for me, it certainly appears as though CRAW is not in use currently - out of interest if you take a new photo now and try opening it in Affinity Photo, does this open as expected?

I have downloaded and installed Canons DPP software to check the metadata of the CR3 file you've provided here and this appears to be a RAW file, not CRAW - I can also see that your camera firmware is up to date so I'm not certain why this image is failing to open, when the sample .CR3 files open correctly.

Therefore I'll be logging this as a bug with our developers now, attaching a copy of your CR3 file for further investigation. I hope this helps :)

Hold the Presses!

I think I've discovered the source of the problem...

I've always used Photo Supreme to import photos from my cameras into my Windows folders and the PS Catalog simultaneously.

I've just used the Canon EOS Utility to import the same photos into just a Windows folder - and the CR3 files are showing up both in Windows File Explorer (which they weren't doing when using PS) and will open in Affinity.

Therefore it seems clear that PS is screwing with the CR3 files during the import process, and Affinity is innocent. I'll report this to IDimager. Sorry for the trouble...

For what it's worth

Gcoupe's image
Doesn't show as a thumbnail in windows
Photos can't open it
Irfanview can't open it
Adobe DNG converter can't convert it
Random image from Dan's link works perfectly
PhotoLab 5 opens both

No problem at all, many thanks for letting me know as this is certainly helpful and I'm glad to hear you've been able to resolve this!

I will be sure to update the development log with this information now, should our team come across any similar issues in the future with CR3 files :)

Just to follow up here - I reported this to IDimager Support, and they found a bug in the (10-year old) code used in MTP transfers. Photo Supreme receives the file in chunks, and there are cases where the last chunk could be stored with padded bytes. This doesn't affect JPG files, but clearly causes a problem with CR3 files.

IDimager has provided me with a fixed version of Photo Supreme and the issue has been solved.

re: CR3 file Affinity Photo issues ...

Hello there, I hope someone can help me sort this please. I have the a problem with my Canon R10 in that, earlier today, I set my camera shooting RAW (not CRAW) at 15 fps.  which of course produces CR3 files. Now, I took the SD card out of the camera and inserted into a reader, copied the files to my Mac. .......and this is where the problem starts.....when opening in Affinity Photo it opens the photo but creates some strange 'overlay' all over the photo ( I shall try to attach the actual RAW file example and a screen dump of how it opens in Affinity Photo - very odd!). I have also noticed however that in the screenshot, the file details references at the top 'HDR' - but I haven't setup anything for HDR on my camera. I'm stuck as to what to try next. Is this a bug too? Thanks for any help you can give.

You appear to be using V1 and the R10 is not supported in that version, there's a list somewhere in the forum faq
However, you can use the Adobe DNG converter and that works plus if you add the attached file to the Lens profile folder the lens will be automatically selected

Hi,

Bumping an old thread - I seem to have a similar issue with AP 2.5.7 (latest as of posting), and my new Canon R5 mark II CR3 raw files. When I just use the "open" dialog, the image is imported with very pale "veil" on it, quite similar to the one posted by @Canon5D6D7D above, and quite a narrow histogram. I'm using RAW as opposed to cRAW on the camera. The JPG version of same photo looks just fine.

I might be missing something quite basic - any help would be appreciated.

@doron Can you upload a sample raw file. There may have been some changes in the last 7 months

RAW files from the Canon EOS R5 Mk2 are not supported in the current Affinity Photo 2.5.7 version but support for this camera will be added in the 2.6 update which is currently in beta testing, if you would like to try this beta version you can use the following link to signup to the beta.

https://affinity.serif.com/affinity-beta-program/

That would explain 🙂 Thank you! and I will try that.

EDIT: Just installed and tried 2.6 beta; I can confirm that the issue is (obviously) gone and the raw image looks just fine. Thank you - much appreciated.
