Select same but only on 1 artboard

Can you please add the ability to select same (or any select (blank)) and restrict it to the working artboard. I wanted to find a stroke weight but it wants to find everything on all 20 artboards. Maybe the option to select current artboard or all artboards?

Edit All Layers specifically says 'Layers'.

I have a document with two artboards, each containing a red rectangle. I disable Edit All Layers and select a rectangle on one of the artboards.

I use Select Same > Fill Colour and change it from red to green. As expected, the red rectangle on the other artboard is unaffected.

If I do the same with a document containing two layers instead of artboards, the red rectangles on both layers get selected and change to green.

Are they Layers (capital L), or layers (as all objects are "layers")?

I see that same behavior in 2.1.0.1730.

It feels wrong, to me. You could post that as a bug in the appropriate V2 bugs forum. It's been mentioned in some discussions, but I haven't seen any comments from Serif. And I don't think it's been posted in the Bugs forum yet.

If it's by design, one of the Serif staff will let us know.

I think I've seen the problem mentioned on posts relating to Select Same ignoring hidden objects and suspect that Serif are aware of it. I'll check the bugs forum.

I wonder if they enabled the restriction for Artboards (based on similar complaints about Select Same including too much) but neglected to enable it for Layers. That's what feels like a bug, as a setting that specifically says Layers should work on Layers

In Help (see previous link and citation) is explicitly mentioned only "artboards". The fact that the long-existing Edit all Layers button is misused for switching the single artboard vs. all artboard function can be confusing (there should be a other specific "Select all Artboards" button for this), but it doesn't have to mean a design omission.

Select the Layer Layer (container Layer) E.g. called Layer 1
In the colour panel change Tint from 100% to 50%
Select one of the objects you wanted to change the fill color
Select Same > Fill Colour
Tag all those objects with a Tag colour
Select Layer 1 (again)
Change Tint back to 100%

Now use Select Same > Tag Colour to target the objects you want to change the fill on

 

Will work for some documents but not those that have existing tint colours (less than 100%) in the container Layer you are targetting.

It's no great problem for me to do what I need to do, especially since I'm now using Layers more than I used to do to split objects across the document and which helps with selection.

I would be even better if there was a feature allowing selected objects or layers to be edited in a separate tab, independent of the main document. Food for thought for the future?

The Edit All Layers button seems a little hidden to me, especially for new users. Maybe the tooltip could be more descriptive or maybe a menu toggle item could be added in the Layers or Select dropdown something like "apply to all layers and artboards" ?? I'm not sure where it would make the most sense to add it but perhaps it's worth looking into, to be a little clearer for people searching for the feature.

Edit All Layers disabled can be confusing because its restriction can be at Group level, or at Layer level or at Artboard (which is really a clipping shape with additional properties) level, depending on what operation is being performed.

It probably started life as a Layer level constraint and then additional rules were added.

I don't think I've ever seen it affect Group level activity. Only Layers or Artboards.

When does it affect Groups?

When you select a member of a Group then do Select All: if Edit All Layers is disabled, only the members of the Group will become selected.
