Hi

Second idiot question i  one 24 hour period: having opened the correct app (derr) i now can only get page numbering to show a # rather than a page number in  a page number field - this is how it looks on both master and actual pages - any suggestions?

Please can you show a screenshot of a document page layout + the according master text frame selected + Preview mode de-activated + in menu Text these two options activated. Like so …

In that last screenshot, Ian, you still have Master A selected, not a document page. You can tell this from the page navigator at the bottom of the screen (below the Pages panel) which shows Master A.

The page number is supposed to be # on the Master page.

You're still on Master A:

You need to double-click the page you want to see in the Pages panel. It needs a gray highlight.

The other thing to recognize is the difference between a blue highlight on the Pages panel (selected for operations within the Pages panel) and a gray highlight (selected for editing).

completely counter intuitive to my mind

As Walt hinted without mentioning it literally: a single click selects the page thumbnail only, a double-click selects it for the layout window.
