I can't open Affinity Photo, Affinity Photo 2, Affinity Designer 2, or Affinity Publisher 2. When I click on it, the little wheel spins for a couple seconds, then nothing.

They were all working before, then my computer got hosed and I had to re-install Windows 10 from an ISO file. All of my (dozens of) other apps worked fine after the re-install - except for Affinity (and Adobe Reader). I always run the latest update of Windows 10 (My PC is too old to run 11).

When I hold down the Ctrl key and click on Affinity 2 - I get nothing.

I tried uninstalling and re-installing the latest version of Affinity photo 2 - nothing.

Did you use the MSIX or the MSI installer to install Affinity 2?

Make sure you have fully updated Windows via Windows Update, after the reinstallation.

AS I said in my original post. I'm running the latest Windows update.

Several users have reported that they reinstalled Windows, and were on the latest Win 10 update, and weren't. So I ask.

A reset would remove ALL of my installed programs and I'm not going to do that. Instead I reinstalled windows from an ISO file, choosing the option to keep all of my files and apps. It took all night to run. It fixed my other problems and presreved all my installed programs and all of them work afterwards, EXCEPT, as I said, Affinity  which would not work even after I completely deleted and re-installed it.

You could try a Reset just of the Affinity applications. Make sure none of them are running (Restart Windows, or check Task Manager).

Next:

  1. Press and Hold the Ctrl key. Do not release it until instructed.
  2. Click on one of the V2 applications to start it.
  3. Wait for the Clear User Data dialog. Also watch for the application to appear on the Task Bar, and if you get the icon but do not get the dialog, click the icon.
  4. When you have the dialog, release the Ctrl key.
  5. The first time you do this for an application, leave the first 3 items checked, and click Reset.

If the application starts, try the other two applications. If either still fails, do the above for that application.

If it does not work with just the first 3 items checked in step 5, try again but select everything in step 5 before clicking Reset.

I held the ctrl key and pressed Affinity Photo 2. I held the ctrl key for 5 minutes. No User Data dialog appeared. No icons appeared in the task bar. Nothing.

I can't find the exe versions in my account. Only the msix files.

I think I am ready to give up on Affinity on this PC, and just move it to a new PC (I need to get a newer PC that will run Windows 11 soon anyway.)

You might check Task Manager and confirm that it's not already running, perhaps as a background process. If so, end it.

You have to start (launch) the app while holding down the Control key on the keyboard to get this dialog. It won't work if the app is already running.

Did you try the CTRL reset method mentioned above? If so, what happened?

EDIT: Note that reinstalling the Affinity apps will not reset their per-user user preferences/settings or fix any corruption in the files where they are stored. It is the same for most other apps that do not have a dedicated uninstaller/reinstaller that (usually optionally) removes everything related to the app.

This is so that reinstalling an app will not wipe out all those settings & why there is a reset option in the Affinity ones that can selectively reset some or all of these settings to their factory defaults.

Hi Bob,

I am on Windows 10 and use the latest v2 applications on my laptop. From time to time, I have the same problem as you, a progress wheel and then nothing.

I already posted earlier in this forum, and here is the link:

Designer-Photo-Publisher no longer starting

I solved this problem by using IObit Advanced SystemCare Pro, which fixed it easily. Maybe the free version will also work. If you are interested, here is the link:

IObit Advanced SystemCare Free

I hope this helps.

I have tried all tricks mentioned in this topic...

What did you select in the Clear User Data window after you (re)started APub or AD with the Control key held down?

I tried to hold Ctrl Key then clicked to open but it cant bring anything it cant bring the dialogue .It does not respond to that

Then you are not doing it correctly, most likely because the app was running even though there was no open window for it. So first make sure you have quit the app. (If you are unsure about how to do that, you could restart your computer.)

Next, press & continue to hold down the Control key while starting up the app. Don't release the Control key until you see the Clear User Data window.

How specifically are you trying to start up the app at that time? IOW, what are you clicking on, what is its name, & where is it located in your computer's folders?

When you do that, are you holding down the Control key before you click on whatever that is & are you continuing to hold it down?

Do you get any alert sounds or other indications or does nothing at all happen?

I am only asking for these specifics because assuming the app is installed correctly & is not already running, the control startup method should bring up the Clear User Data window.
