dead Posted March 4, 2023 Posted March 4, 2023 The Designer won't even open it's own files (afdesign). Quote
Hangman Posted March 4, 2023 Posted March 4, 2023 Hi @dead and welcome to the forums... Are you able to upload one of the files that you are unable to open so we can take a look to see what might be causing the problem... Which platform are you working on Mac or Windows and which version of the OS? dead Posted March 4, 2023 Author Posted March 4, 2023 No, I don't want to do that. I'm using Windows 10. I'm trying to use Affinity to try and open an Affinity file. Quote
Hangman Posted March 4, 2023 Posted March 4, 2023 One of the moderators will be able to provide you with a private Dropbox link if you're not wanting to upload the file directly to the forum though that may not now be until next week as their office will be closed over the weekend... If that works for you then if you reply to this message requesting a link that would be the best option. Does your Designer file contain any Linked content, is it a simple of complex file... the more information you can provide the better others will be able to assist you... dead Posted March 4, 2023 Author Posted March 4, 2023 It opened it before fine. This should be a pretty straight forth process. Absolutely nothing personal but this is the kind of bs that made me miss CS4 while being exploited by the over-engineered Adobe sub service... Quote

I completely understand your frustration and I think that is everyone's expectation as well. If you've been working on a file and all of a sudden it no longer opens that is pretty annoying but the objective is obviously to figure out why the file suddenly isn't opening which could be for a number of reasons, e.g., a linked file has become corrupted, the file itself for some reason has corrupted or a host of other reasons... People on the forums really only want to help where they can and I know the first thing the moderation staff at Serif will likely ask you is if they can take a look at the file, hence the suggestion of a private dropbox link... The likelihood is that they will be able to figure out pretty much instantly what is causing the issue but without some additional information everyone is fishing in the dark. Any information you can provide is helpful because others may have experienced something similar and be able to provide possible solutions... can you open the file in Publisher or Photo (if you have them)... I know for example that there is, what I understand to be a Mac specific bug, causing files not to open which is resolved by renaming a mru.dat file but other Windows users may recognise this issue you have and provide solutions for you... Are you getting any error messages when trying to open the file, is Designer itself crashing, what is the rough makeup of your file in terms of content... I can only recommend requesting a private upload link and then the Serif team can hopefully resolve the issue for you quickly and efficiently. Staff Patrick Connor Posted March 4, 2023 Staff Posted March 4, 2023 @dead Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums  You have posted in the beta area. Are you talking about the beta not opening your files or are you talking about the version of Affinity Designer software that you bought ? Is the problem when you double click to open the files ? If you start the application first can you open the files from within the software? dead Posted March 22, 2023 Author Posted March 22, 2023 Hello, I've been busy but it's happening even with a new file. The tools aren't available in the 'Window' drop down (they're all greyed out). This is a brand new file, started with the 'New...' selection in the 'File' dropdown so it's as organic as it could be. Quote
Hangman Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 @dead Could you confirm which version of Designer you are using, as @Patrick Connor mentioned, you've posted in the beta forum, so is it the v2.1 beta you are experiencing this issue with or the 2.0.4 retail version? Have you tried a factory reset of Designer which you can do by holding down the Ctrl key when launching the app and then clicking Clear when the Clear User Data dialogue window appears with the first three options ticked to see if that fixes the issue... Note: A factory reset will revert back to the default UI and mean any custom changes you've made to the tools, toolbar and general UI layout will be lost so you will have to reset those again... If you could try that and confirm the version of Designer you are using and then let us know whether you are still experiencing the same issue that woudl be very helpful... dead Posted March 22, 2023 Author Posted March 22, 2023 Thank you, I'm using the 2.04 retail version (I'm sorry I assumed that would be known). I uninstalled and reinstalled and the problem still exists (with an organic file being used; created File>new...). I will try the reset. Quote
Hangman Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 Just now, dead said: Thank you, I'm using the 2.04 retail version (I'm sorry I assumed that would be known). The question came up because you had posted your issue in the V2.1 Beta forum but thank you for clarifying, that's very helpful... Let us know how the reset goes and whether it makes any difference, if not then someone from the moderation team may have some additional questions or things you can try... In the meantime could you also confirm which version of Windows 10 you are using as 2.0.4 requires Windows 10 May 2020 Update (2004, 20H1, build 19041) or later to run. dead Posted March 22, 2023 Author Posted March 22, 2023 I tried the reset a few times but not seeing a clear button at all. Quote
Hangman Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 So does keeping the Ctrl key held down when launching Designer bring up a Clear user data dialogue window showing a list of items with the first three in the list already checked? If it does then there should be a Clear button at the bottom of that Window which once clicked will then continue with the app launch… What do you see when trying this… Quote Affinity Designer 2.6.0 | Affinity Photo 2.6.0 | Affinity Publisher 2.6.0 MacBook Pro M3 Max, 36 GB Unified Memory, macOS Sonoma 14.6.1, Magic Mouse HP ENVY x360, 8 GB RAM, AMD Ryzen 5 2500U, Windows 10 Home, Logitech Mouse
