In version 1 when I was using the brush I had three options: width of the brush, Flow of the colour and Hardness which made the selected colour stronger. In version 2 I seem not to have Hardness with the Paintbrush. The function is greyed out and set at 100%. The function is available with the Clone tool so I know that it is there somewhere. I have tried using the various brush options and wondered if somehow I had disabled the Hardness when using the Brush.

I have probably missed the obvious so anyone with a clearer mind: thank you

In V1, the setting was available for all the Brushes in the Brushes panel, but was only effective for some of them. In V2, they fixed that discrepancy, such that Hardness is only available for the brushes where it will be effective.

I have quite a few Ron Devine brushes and there are certain brushes such as overlay brushes and flourish brushes that don't require hardness, although it would be nice to have a choice to make for yourself.

The basic brush works for me with all the controls I need.

If I remember correctly, the brushes in Basic were/are the only ones where Hardness actually worked in V1. And they are, I think, the only ones where it is allowed in V2.

I have a few brush sets by Kyle and some of the Manga brushes work with Hardness active but it's a bit hit and miss, although it seems like any brush with a texture base and no custom nozzle has hardness active. All the Ron brushes I have installed have Hardness disabled.

I'm pretty sure you're right. I just dipped back into V1 and with a couple of exceptions only the Basic brushes are affected by changes to hardness. In the brush editor, the Hardness slider moves, but its 'track' is blank (all the changeable settings below have a blue 'track'):

Changing the Hardness has no effect on the appearance of brush strokes in the document.

In V2, editing the same brush, the slider is immoveable at 100% and its button (and that of other non-changeable settings) is greyed out:

This to me seems a better approach.

I used the basic brushes for this drawing where the Hardness was a vital tool for me but that was V1.

You can still do that in V2, with the Basic brushes.
