If I roll the History position back several moves to see an earlier version of my work and as much as touch an object, all of the work I have done beyond the current point gets lost.

Is there a way to preserve all my subsequent moves if I make an edit at a midway point?

You should see the Cycle Future Icon on the right of each History state. I think it helps keep the timeline compact, more manageable.

Duuuuude!

Playing with that feature I see how it works! I would have never even noticed that icon much less known what it was.

Solved.

Thank you! 😃
