Document not displaying properly after attempting to edit embedded document

Recommended Posts

When I double click to edit an embedded document, the display goes all wonky and will not correct itself until I exit and reopen the document. It doesn’t seem to be only this document. It also happens (same document) in Publisher. This has been a thing for quite a while.

thanks for your help.

Hi, it would be useful if you could upload a screen recording of what happens and/or upload a sample document that exhibits this problem.

Ok, was this originally a PSD template with smart objects? If so only stand alone Affinity Photo has the additional option "import PSD Smart Objects where possible" which converts Adobe Smart objects into embedded documents. With such templates you double click on the newly created embedded layer then can change the logo image then close the embedded document and see the changes reflected in the t shirt.

Just now, Derrick Phillips said:

Correct. That is the intended behavior. But as you can see in the recording, once I go to the embedded document the screen doesn’t render properly. And on returning to the main document view that doesn’t display properly until I exit back to the menu  and reopen the file.

Yes but you are using Affinity Designer and Affinity Publisher, and neither have the PSD Smart Object import option. Only stand alone Affinity Photo can import a PSD Smart Object template correctly.

So, just for my sanity, I continued to fuss with this.
I found that when opening a smart PSD in designer the embedded document converts to layers (as described/should).
I then opened the Smart PSD in photo and got the same display issues as in designer and publisher. I have the import smart psd selected and all is in order with photo.
the file behaves properly except for the screen redraw.
I can work around this but it seems an odd issue.

thanks again.

My smart objects are converted to layers by designer and I can’t go any further, the same in photo the smart objected converts to an embedded layer where I can make changes that are reflected in the t shirt texture correctly.

Maybe try a Forced Restart might help or if you can upload your psd I can see what it does on my iPad.

Mockup.psdMockup.psdI’ve restarted, restored and reset etc. this still happens. I usually don’t come to the forums until I’m all out of ideas. I’m wondering if it has anything to do with file size or RAM? I’m on the M2 iPad Pro but have the 8(?)GB RAM version.

Seems to work fine on my macOS M1 Mac Mini and my M1 iPad Pro. I did spot a strange additional layer which explains that weird line which was another image of an iPad but you will see I delete that no idea why it was there.

To me it looks like there is a hardware/software problem with your iPad, if so, try in order

1. Try closing all open apps and doing a Forced Restart of your iPad which initialises a lot more of your iPad hardware than a power off then on does.

2. Save all your work in an iCloud folder and delete the app and re-install. Potentially all three of them. As an alternative you could sign up for the public beta and install V2.1 alongside your existing installations.

3. Try a backup and restore cycle of your iPad. This does not put the problem back as it gives you clean new versions of all firmware in iPad.

4. Return to Apple store for replacement.

Hi @Derrick Phillips,

Thanks for your report and I'm sorry to see you're having trouble!

Can you please confirm for me, do you have iOS Settings > Display > Display Zoom > More Space enabled?

If so, this is known issue when entering embedded documents and the mipmaps rendering incorrectly, which is logged with our development team to be resolved ASAP.

Disabling the aforementioned option should stop this from occurring, which I suspect is the reason Paul cannot replicate this on their iPad currently.

I hope this helps :)

Please note -

I am currently out of the office for a short while whilst recovering from surgery (nothing serious!), therefore will not be available on the Forums during this time.

Should you require a response from the team in a thread I have previously replied in - please Create a New Thread and our team will be sure to reply as soon as possible.

Many thanks!

Wow thank you @Dan C I changed that setting and I am seeing the same problem as @Derrick Phillips. Tne strange thing is I continued to have other problems with that document after changing the zoom setting back to default. Tip for @Derrick PhillipsI had to close the document and open it again fresh before the embedded objects would work correctly again.
