Actually, i grouped the two things, an oval and a square to drag the transparency across both of them.  And when i tried to add another it deleted the first one.

Any layer – and a Group is a type of layer – can only have one transparency, but you can group Groups.

See my attached image where the Child group has a radial transparency added to it and the Parent group has a linear transparency added to it.
