Crop tool not cropping image, just altering canvas size.

If I want to apply a QuickFX such as Outline it won't work because the image remains the same size off the canvas.

Also the behaviour is really buggy and laggy. Layer-image takes ages to update. The blue border editor can be in the wrong place relative to the image.

Maybe I am wrong. The new way/ work around is to "Rasterize and trim" afterwards.

Also the blend-modes in OutlineFX don't appear to work.

(Affinity Photo 2.0.4)

A photo of granite that I want to turn into a square tile. I want the OutlineFX to dodge/burn the edges/corners but the Blend-mode on OutlineFX doesn't seem to work. It will work for Colour-Overlay though.

This does indeed appear to be a bug... I'm unsure whether this has already been reported but one of the moderators will move this thread to the appropriate bug forum... Are you using Photo 2.0.4 on macOS or Windows?

The blend mode for the Ouline FX is behaving differently between V1 and V2 on Mac at least, I added a solid black border with an internal radius of 100px and when applying e.g., the Overlay Blend Mode (as per the screenshots above), in V1 it the blend works as expected, in V2 in outline remains solid black regardless of the blend mode selected, i.e., the blend mode appears to be working at all...

Can you upload that V2 document with the blend mode set to overlay

I'll see what it open like on Windows

Both Versions open the same for me with the Overlay working correctly

So, looks like a Mac only issue

I'd try the different performance settings like OpenCL & Metal? but I dont know Macs enough to know what else it could be, other than a bug

Except that @Simon 2.0.4 appears to be having the same issue on Windows 10...

I've tried both OpenGL and Metal but it makes no difference for me...

I don't know if this is relevant, or if it was the same in v1, but if you lower the opacity of the fx (inner) outline it is transparent below (rather than the image showing through). Presumably this is why the blend modes don't appear to work (unless there is another layer below). With other fx, the opacity seems to just affect the fx, rather than the original image.

That's the exact reason why I've added a layer below the layer with the added FX so the blend mode has something to blend with... :)

But what I'm not sure about is, is that how it's supposed to work? Shouldn't the opacity and/or blend mode affect the fx, not the image itself? It just seems a bit odd that this happens with the outline fx, but not others.

Comparison between V2 and V1

My assumption (rightly or wrongly) is that the V1 behaviour is the expected one and the one I'm assuming both yourself and @carl123 are seeing on Windows?

Simply clicking on the Blend Mode label in the FX panel reveals the effect in V2, it's just not being applied...

Thank you for your time!
My cropping-issue is definitely my incompetence/unfamiliarity with Affinity Photo.

but the OutlineFX issue gets more complicated because when I open your files, it works perfectly in both V1 and V2.
but I can't initiate it to work in either 1 .10.6.1665 or 2.0.4

Did you Rasterise & Trim the layer after cropping but before the FX

At this point I am just loading-up any old jpg and trying to add an OutlineFX with a Blend mode, but no luck.

Upload that Affinity document (with the FX and Blend mode) to the forum so we can see what you have done

See if this helps... ignore the fact the blend mode isn't working in the screen recording, this appears to be a bug on macOS as discussed above...

I upload two files.

One is of the jpg in question.

The other is the OutlineFX applied to a PNG test render. On my machine there are black dots all over the image. (Really unexpected behaviour)

In the texture file the blend modes work but you need another layer beneath them to see the effect (try another jpg placed below your image- resize it to fill the canvas)

The Render file has 100s of Partially Transparent pixels giving the Dots effect. You can see them if you do Select > Select Alpha Range > Select Partially Transparent with the image layer selected

There's certainly something odd going on in V2 on Mac...

Even with the added layer, the Blend Mode isn't working in V2 on Mac...

Again, this isn't affecting the Blend Mode in V1... (see previous post)
