The configuration of my system is, that new apps will be installed on drive "D", but the installation of the beta apps is happend on drive "C" ans it´s not possible to move them to drive "D". If i want to move them, i get an error message.
The installation of the current apps went right on drive "D".

Other apps from the microsoft store will be, as expected, installed on drive "D".

My OS is Win11 Pro 22H2, Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22638.1000.0

Maybe this information would be helpful.

Have a nice day.

Hello, @Uwe367,

I will agree with you. I had this problem once when I upgraded QuarkXPress and I solved it by buying a more powerful SSD.

SSDs are becoming more and more affordable, but they can be expensive and time-consuming to install, especially because of the high cost of the professional version of Windows, its installation and the cost of reinstalling applications.

When an application cannot be installed on a partition other than the system partition, this can cause several problems, including

  1. Lack of storage space: If the system partition is already full, there may be storage space problems for installing new applications or updating existing ones. This can slow down the system or even prevent the installation of some applications.
  2. Risk of system corruption: Installing applications on the system partition may increase the risk of operating system corruption. If an application is poorly designed or contains bugs, it can affect the operation of the operating system, which can cause errors or crashes.
  3. Difficulty backing up or restoring data: If all applications are installed on the system partition, it may be difficult to back up or restore important data without performing a full backup of the operating system. This can lead to significant data loss in the event of a problem with the operating system.
  4. Difficulty troubleshooting the system: If problems occur with the operating system, it may be difficult to resolve them if all applications are installed on the system partition. Troubleshooting may require a complete reinstallation of the operating system, which can be a time-consuming process.
  5. Increased security risk: If all applications are installed on the system partition, this may increase the security risk to the operating system. If an application is compromised by malware, this can lead to a vulnerability in the operating system as a whole, which can cause security problems.

In summary, installing all applications on the system partition can lead to problems with storage space, security, backup, troubleshooting and system corruption. It is recommended to install applications on a separate partition from the system partition to avoid these problems.

We have all seen that Serif is aware of these drawbacks. They will probably take less time to solve it than their competitor.

That sounds like something is not working right.

(On the other hand, there have been various reports with V2 also that it only installs to C, and can't be moved to D. So there is something funky going on in Windows since this works properly for some users and not for others. And now, with you, it has worked successfully with 2.0 but not with 2.1.)

@walt.farrell
I think so too.
Something is going wrong, but what?

One of these varioius posts is from me, see this post from last year.
By the way... the error message now is the same:

A small time after the first post, i found a solution to configure windows, to install new apps in drive "D" and with version 2.0 there were no problems, but with the beta versions.... it seems that they "bypass" the Windows settings and if i try to move them manually, i get an error message.

Let´s wait what serif has to say to this behavior.

Have a nice day.

Hi @Uwe367,

I can't replicate this issue. I can both move it to a different partition, or directly install it to another partition.

I doubt we have any control over what windows does behind the scenes though. The move process from one partition to another is not handled by us, so there's not much I can advise to do. Sorry.

Hello Gabe,

thanks for your answer. I can understand that Affinity probably can't do anything about it. But it is strange that the current versions were installed immediately on drive D (my system settings) and the betas were installed on drive C, bypassing the system settings.
I have my system set so, that new apps are automatically installed on drive D.
Moving them doesn't work either because I get an error message.

Ok... it's not nice, but I can (must) live with it and maybe it will work someday.

Have a nice day.

Alternatively, you could uninstall the MSIX-based applications and install the EXE-based ones.

Thanks for this hint @walt.farrell

Big thanks.

The first one or two beta builds had only MSIX. Then EXE was made available.

Ah ok.
That i had not known.

With the .exe files it works now as i want, but i still wonder because i installed an app from mircosoft store, in this case Blender 3D, and this app was installed in drive D, as the system settings have it and this is also a MSIX installer. I can also move this app to each other drive without any problem.

Anyway, it works now as i want, and I prefer .exe files, because they give me control.

Store apps and MSIX-based apps are very similar, but different in their implementation, I think. MSIX is a follow-on to the technology first used in the Store.

I changed nothing in the System settings, but now it works... magic 😄
