Affinity Design documents opening in Publisher

I almost always use Affinity Designer, so all my old files are saved in that format. I am wanting to copy some elements from old posters for new posters in AD but every time I open them they appear in Affinity Publisher (rarely used).

Even if I close Publisher down and open the document in AD it opens up Publisher ???

I am not very skilled and only do very basic documents. 

I am up to date with the new '2'  software in AD, Publisher and Photo

Try to option-click on the file (or Windows equivalent) and select Affinity Designer.

That will open your file in the Designer.

Alternatively, launch the Designer and open the file in question from there. (File->Open)
