Effect is also seen when adjustment to which live mask is attached is turned off. This seems to work for me as expected (assuming I understood you correctly). The preview only shows a cover mask where the selected areas are displayed as brightness values. Maybe you can provide us with some screenshots (e.g. of the layer panel). Quote
