TrentL Posted February 11, 2023 Posted February 11, 2023 Hi all, I have a relatively simply use case. In the example below, I would like to select the blue star and red line at the same time, and then move them so the red line snaps exactly to the left edge of the canvas. But it seems to always snap based on the blue blue star and the red line is ignored. It works fine when I only move the red line, but I am trying to keep the star and line in the same position relative to each other. I tried creating a green line on the edge of the canvas and seeing if the red line would snap to that when blue star + red line, but it doesn't. I also tried editing various snap settings and creating guides, but that didn't work for me (unless I am missing something). I tried to add my sample file but the website was giving me an error. The example is pretty simple to create if you like. The red line was created with the pen tool and the star is a default shape. Thanks! Trent Quote
v_kyr Posted February 11, 2023 Posted February 11, 2023 As far as I can see there are several ways to position it exactly there. Group the star and line Disable snapping Drag out an vertical Ruler guide and position it on the canvas edge x=0 Enable snapping and drag the whole group over there to the canvas so that the red line snaps to the Ruler guide Another way is to manually position the group there via inspection if the red line of the group is on x=0 or x=1, you can finetune and move the whole group 1 pixel step wise with the left/right cursor arrow keys. lepr Posted February 11, 2023 Posted February 11, 2023 Ensure snap to spread is enabled and use Point Transform Tool: select line and star activate Point Transform Tool (F) Mac: hold down ctrl key and drag a node of the line to snap to edge of the canvas Windows: hover the pointer over a node of the line and read status bar at bottom of app window to get the modifier for 'to translate', then do the drag and snap to edge of canvas Quote

Thanks, this is what I tried originally (and again just now) but it never seems to recognize the red line. It will just snap to the points on the star. Maybe I screwed something up in my Snap settings? These are my current settings but I tried checking pretty much everything at one point: 3 hours ago, ,,, said: Ensure snap to spread is enabled and use Point Transform Tool: select line and star activate Point Transform Tool (F) Mac: hold down ctrl key and drag a node of the line to snap to edge of the canvas Windows: hover the pointer over a node of the line and read status bar at bottom of app window to get the modifier for 'to translate', then do the drag and snap to edge of canvas Great, this seems to work! When using the Point Transform tool and selecting a point on the red line, it WILL snap to the edge of the canvas when moved near there. To provide some background on why I want to do this, I think it is a super easy way to create seamless patterns. I have never seen this method used before. You essentially drag a copy of your shape + the line and use the line as a guide to snap to the opposite edge of the canvas. Then hide the lines, export, and you can see that it aligns correctly without a seam. Quote
