This sounds like you may have a corrupt font on your system. I would first open Font Book and use it to validate all your installed fonts and deactivate or remove any problem ones found. Next I would clear the Font Cash, either with a third party maintenance app like Onyx or by starting the computer in Safe Mode which will also clear the cash. Once the system has finished starting in Safe Mode you can then just restart it normally.
