I created a file with multiple artboards in Designer V2 on a Mac and then tried to open the file in Designer V2 on my 2020 iPad Pro.

Designer V2 will immediately crash when trying to open the document without displaying any warning.

I tried to open it through OneDrive, iCloud and local storage.

Nothing works. What's going on?

To start, can you confirm what release of Designer 2 you have installed on your iPad? From the application home screen, you can see that info if you click on the Account icon.

Hi MisoBrew,

I've taken a look at the file you've provided and there's certainly something not quite right with it.

On Windows, if you edit one of your embedded documents, it appears with no layers, which only become visible once a new document is created using a snapshot from it.

How were the embedded documents created and do you have one we could examine, I'm not sure I trust the ones in the file are fully intact.

Hi Lee,

my "workflow" with this document was:

  1. Create an artboard
  2. Take a screenshot of a page (Safari on iPad) and save it as a PDF
  3. Drag the pdf onto the artboard

Does this answer your question?

I'm taking a guess that you "share" the page as a PDF rather than as a screenshot.  I've conducted a test on a random page exported from iOS's web>PDF conversion and I can recreate my embedded layers issue but not the crashes so far.

Could you send a crash file following these instructions?

Hey @LeeThorpe,

it's been two weeks since I first reported this issue.
Is there any way to get in touch with Serif directly and escalate this?

I've paid for a product that is not working as intended - I guess asking for support is not too much.

This is Serif directly, as this is a bug, it sometimes takes time to investigate. This appears to be a linked issue and has been reported so hopefully should be resolved soon.

The issue "PDF's created in safari export Placed into Publisher/Designer when opened on desktop causes layer/object issues." (REF: AFB-7256) has been fixed by the developers in build "2.1.0.1806".

This fix is in the current customer release.
If you still experience this problem once you are using that build version (or later) please reply to this thread including @Serif Info Bot to notify us
