Orinocco Posted February 5, 2023 Posted February 5, 2023 Hi I am working in Designer 2.04 and have created a custom vector brush to enable me to draw an eight lane avenue with parking spaces. To do this, I created the design on an artboard, then within the export persona, using the slice for my artboard, I exported the image as a 3x PNG. I then selected New Textured Image brush from within the brushes studio panel and edited the brush to repeat rather than stretch. However when I create a stroke using the pen tool, then apply the custom brush to the stroke, it leaves repeated gaps between uniform sections. I have checked the artboard and my design image is totally aligned with the edges of the artboard. Using the same artboard, I exported direct to PNG from within the Designer profile and created a PNG 3x my design. I created another brush using this exported image and it worked perfectly. No gaps at all. I have checked the two png images I created and there does not appear to be any gaps or edges in either of them. They are both from the same artboard and one works and one doesn’t. I tried experimenting with larger images and with having the objects overhanging the edges of the artboard, but that did not seem to make any difference. So it seems that the issue appears to be with how the slice is created for the artboard in the export persona. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong here? I have attached the two PNGs I exported as well as an image showing the outcomes as an example. In the outcomes the two on the left are from the export using the slice. I’d really appreciate any pointers or advice here as I am relatively new to this stuff. Many thanks. Quote
Staff NathanC Posted February 26, 2023 Staff Posted February 26, 2023 Hey @Orinocco welcome to the forums and apologies for the late reply, Regarding your second image which was exported out as a slice as PNG X3, there does appear to be a 1px~ transparent border around your image which will then have introduced the gaps between the repeated sections of the brush. It's difficult to say why this was the case originally without the original .afdesign document prior to the export, but after placing your image on an artboard and cropping the image to remove the border and exporting again using PNG x3, this didn't happen for me. Rather than going through the entire export process again, in the brush editor you can adjust the head/tail offset values for the brush with gaps so that these gaps are removed entirely, like in the example below. Orinocco Posted March 6, 2023 Author Posted March 6, 2023 Hi Nathan C Many thanks for taking the trouble to reply to me. I took another look, and there certainly does appear to be a border around the edge of the image in the slice. That would explain the gaps when using the image to create a custom brush. I tried playing around with the handles, making the image overlap etc etc, but I always seem to end up with the gaps. When I just exported the artboard directly to png without using the export persona or creating a slice, it worked perfectly. So the issue appears to be with the slice creation, unless I am doing something wrong obviously. That is highly likely since I am very new to using this type of application. As I have already found what is to me a perfectly acceptable work around, I can't see myself getting into a screeching rage about this! I was merely curious to see whether this is an inbuilt issue with the slices, or down to me being inept. I'm perfectly willing to accept it is almost certainly the latter! I have attached a copy of the afdesign document with the artboard and slice so you can take a look if you so wish. I deleted all the other artboards and stuff not related to this query, so it's all easier to see. I'd be very interested to hear the cause of the 1px border, or what it is I am doing wrong, so that I can avoid it in the future. Thank you again for taking the time and trouble to help me. You have lots of fractional pixel sizes and locations for the items that make up the road. Odds are that will be the source of the problem.
