Imported PSD with Layer Masks = No Layer Masks

Recommended Posts

Is there a setting I need to make when saving a PSD with Layer Masks?

I have some really simple PSDs, just a few pixel layers, each one with blank layer masks.

I've opened up complex mockup PSDs with Smart Objects and the like on AP for ipad and they've opened fine and from a few search results I seen sites saying AP supports layer masks so I'm assuming it's a setting I need to check?

Not working on MacOs desktop or ipad 2.0.4

There is a preference setting in the General Section: Import PSD Smart objects if possible.

Hi @SlvgDvb,

Thanks for your report and our sincerest apologies for the delayed response here. We are exceptionally busy following the release of V2 and we thank you for your continued patience and understanding here.

Can you please provide a sample .PSD file that shows this issue, such that I can investigate further?

Many thanks in advance!

Hi @Changa,

Welcome to the Affinity Forums :)

The PSD file you've provided is using 'Pixel' Layers, which can't be directly replaced with an Image - therefore you will need to add your images into the PSD file, then move the Mask Layers from the empty Pixel Layer to the newly placed Image Layer.

To do this, please try the following;

  1. Navigate to File > Open and select this PSD file
  2. Expand the Layers in the Layers Studio
  3. Select the empty Pixel Layer you want to replace ('Image 01' is the background image, 'Image 02' is the largest frame on the left of the doc, etc)
  4. Navigate to File > Place and select the Image you want to add to the canvas
  5. Click and drag on the canvas to draw the image in the required size/location
  6. In the Layers Studio, drag the relevant clipped Mask layer from the empty Pixel Layer
  7. Drop this Mask layer over the thumbnail of the new Image layer you've just placed - this will Mask the image using the Mask data
  8. Delete the empty Pixel Layer you've moved the Mask Layer from
  9. Repeat for the other empty Pixel Layers, as required.

I've attached a quick screen recording, showing this behaviour below:

If you have Affinity Publisher also, you could use empty Picture Frame objects in this file, so that you can simply select 'Replace Image' on each frame without having to manually reassign masks. I've not created a workflow breakdown for this, but you can find a version of this file using Picture Frames attached below. (Note however these cannot be controlled within Affinity Photo and requires Affinity Publisher).

I hope this helps!

Hoping to re-create this Photoshop file in Affinity Photo. The masks are what confuse me the most. Dan C helped with replacing the images in a previous post (Thanks) but I would like to be able to create similar ones from scratch for myself, or do I need to use Affinity Designer or Affinity Publisher.
