Is there anything in the file meadata to differentiate APho 1 from APho 2 files?

metadata readers I have tried can't open native Affinity files. Easiest way is try & open in Ver 1 and if it does not then it is a Ver 2 file. Either that or stop using Ver 1 (or Ver 2).

No. Not even if you open an Affinity file with a text editor.
I have started a habit to add version numbers to the document name, à la "mydoc110.afpub" or "mydoc204.afdesign".

MacBookAir 15": MacOS Ventura > Affinity v1, v2, v2 beta // MacBookPro 15" mid-2012: MacOS El Capitan > Affinity v1 / MacOS Catalina > Affinity v1, v2, v2 beta // iPad 8th: iPadOS 16 > Affinity v2

That is what I do but I don't use Ver 1 for my files anymore.

If the file date pre-dates V2 release it is a V1 file is the best i can do .... so sort your files by date.

Thanx Paul, what is the date on an iPad, date of creation or modification date. If a file is copied, does that alter the creation date to the copied date?

Modification date, if the file is moved it should not change the date. Even if you duplicate a file, its date is the same date as the original on iPadOS.
