I'm going to guess you're on a Mac, where the default setting of Ctrl+W in v1 would toggle Preview Mode on or off. You can choose Text > Show Special Characters to view those. If this is what you're referring to, you probably created that shortcut in v1 yourself as there is no default shortcut assigned to this command.
