Duplicate a layer by alt + drag & drop in layers panel

Recommended Posts

It seems quite obvious to me that I should be able to duplicate layers by alt + drag & drop in the layers panel in Affinity Designer. This is how it works if you grab on object in the actual canvas and would be the expected behavior also in the layers panel, especially since many other tools work this way as well. Alt doesn't appear to be tied to any other kind of behavior either.

ctrl+j or assign your own shortkey

That's fine if you like using keyboard shortcuts (as I do) but a lot of users are 'mouseketeers' who prefer not to lift a hand off the mouse unless they really have to.

In that case, one can just drag a layer over the "Add Layer" icon.

@Bri-Toon I can't get that to work in my windows version

Huh. Well I am using Mac, so perhaps it wasn't implemented for Windows?

I also support the wish to drop copies in the layer stack with Alt+Drag. Using Ctrl+J isn't equally powerful as this only spits out a silly duplicate.
Alt+Drag combines duplicating and placing the copy exactly where needed. Using that method inside Photoshop one can quickly create any number of copies of layers,
masks, adjustment layers as well as layer-fx and place them all in one go.

If one has a layer in Photo which has three layer-fx (say colour overlay, drop shadow and outline) – is there currently at all a way to only copy the drop shadow of that layer
to another element?

As Photoshop shows assigned fx in a stack one can grab each of them like any other element – that's very useful. I have no idea how to do the same thing inside Photo.

Your tip works in Designer on Mac but not Photo which lacks the particular 'Add Layer' button, and you then have to do a second drag to move the duplicate to the desired position in the layer stack.

That is understandable since vector layers cannot be duplicated as pixel layers. The duplicate option in Designer only works because vector layers are being dragged on a vector layer icon. Though, it would help if the same was done when pixel layers are dragged on the pixel layer icon.
