Vector warp tool crops text outline when rasterising

Recommended Posts

A problem I've just discovered. When I export this text as a jpeg or when I rasterise the Warp group the top of the text is cropped. (There's a slight cropping of the bottom too, but it's barely noticeable.) You can see the effect here . . .

Here's the Warp group with the Node tool selected (top), the Move tool (middle) and the rasterised result (bottom).

Switching the stroke alignment has some influence, but doesn't solve the problem altogether. The stroke is outside and in front; changing this doesn't look how I want it.
I can avoid this by reducing the stroke width, but the appearance is 'thin' and is also not to my liking. I could experiment with different fonts, but I particularly want to use this one! And I want to spend my time getting on with the project.

I could imagine and it looks like from your screenshots, that during rasterization then the overall surrounding bounding box isn't callculated/setup always correctly here.

Workaround:

  1. Before creating the Warp, clip-nest the stroked object (text in the example) inside a Rectangle with no stroke and no fill which is large enough to enclose the entire appearance of the object
  2. Apply a Warp to the Rectangle
  3. Now a rasterisation of the Warp should look correct

what happens if you convert the warped text to curves and perform an expand stroke on it... and the rasterized it?

That's going to look even worse if the Warp is already applied before stroke expansion. The Warp bounds are initialised to contain the paths of objects, not the extents of the strokes on the objects.

I am 100% certain you did not follow my instructions correctly.

I went through it again just to make sure I hadn't followed you properly, but the problem is still there. Then I applied a stroke to see where the rectangle was after warping. This is cropped from a screen grab --

and this is the Export dialog (I did actually export it and the JPG was the same) --

OK, I manually rasterised the Warp and got the correct result. Didn't try export to JPEG.

Now when I try no manual rasterise and export to JPEG the output is also correct, so I do not know why there is a problem for you.

Definitely happens in AD on macOS.

It does for me running Catalina.

I find if I select the Warp Group layer (using the Layers panel just to be safe) and Convert that to Curves I can then Rasterize and trim without losing the outer stroke. Otherwise all bets are off, results range from Fine to [expletive deleted].

All in all I think there is a bug here.

Doesn't appear to be happening for me, actually it's kind of the opposite.

Oui, cela devrait fonctionner, car cela implique une opération de conversion en courbes. Mais c'est Windows uniquement, il n'y a pas de collage spécial sur les versions macOS.

Yes, I'm actually on Windows 😉

Probably mentioned earlier in this thread but from what have experienced, this issue (probably) only occurs when the stroke width is adjusted after creating the warp group.

Problem occurs for me without adjusting stroke after creation of Warp Group.

Hi @Kasper-V & all others here,

Thanks for your report and our sincerest apologies for the delayed response here. We are exceptionally busy following the release of V2 and we thank you for your continued patience and understanding here.

I can confirm I've been able to replicate a few issues here, with the Warp Group clipping the stroke when rasterising, as well as clipping occurring after converting the text to curves and then expanding the stroke for these curve objects - both of which I've logged with our development team.

In regards to the objects being clipped at specific zoom levels, this is already logged with our team so I will be sure to 'bump' this issue with the thread now.

I hope this helps!

Please note -

I am currently out of the office for a short while whilst recovering from surgery (nothing serious!), therefore will not be available on the Forums during this time.

Should you require a response from the team in a thread I have previously replied in - please Create a New Thread and our team will be sure to reply as soon as possible.

Many thanks!
