Hi Everyone,

I am wanting to do a collage for may daughter for her birthday.  I know I can do her name and drop pictures in but I am wanting to do her name and drop multiple pictures in each letter.

I have tried to work this out and wondered if there was a way I can create a collage using the text, but split each letter in to different sections to I can drag and drop more than one photo in to each letter.  Hope that makes sense?  This is the type of thing but maybe more squares:

Welcome to the forums @mattnico,

That is certainly one way to do it. Here's another way.

  • I took the images, (from Pexels ), resized them down. I know you'll probably use your own.
  • Grouped them together
  • Converted the number 1 into curves
  • Clipped the grouped images inside of the number one.

This is using Affinity Photo. Should be able to do the same in Designer.

Hello and welcome!

You didn't said in which Affinity app you want to do it, or which apps you have therefor?

However, here's a rough sketch for you of a common procedure in the steps to perform therefor ...

  1. Use the Artistic Text Tool and type in a huge font size of your choice the text (name of the daughter), or as above shown a "1" for first tryouts.
  2. Select the text (or "1") and "convert it to curves", so you have vectors of the letters now.
  3. Place on every vector letter separetely, several white equally width sized rectangles (use copy/paste for duplicating rects), use the move tool and place, rotate ... place them as you want, or as shown in your above image. Now select the vector letter and all rects arranged on that in the layers panel and perform a geometric subtract operation (this splits the letter into pieces, like shown in your image). - Alternatively on ADe v2 you can use the Knife tool to cut a vector letter into pieces.
  4. After the geom. subtract you should have now several pieces of a letter, group those together as they all belong to one letter.
  5. Now load in images and clip those underneath each of the letter pieces you want it to appear.

How about Pattern Fill Layer :)

  • Create a New Pattern Fill Layer for each of your images to be used in your text.
  • Converted Artistic Text to Curves
  • Ungroup the converted curves
  • Clip the Patterns inside a letter

Ok, so which app(s) do you have? What v_kyr done is just clip the images inside the shapes. It can be done in Photo and Designer.

HI, I have the affinity designer and photo.  But when I try to load it I get this message:

'Failed to open document'

The file includes features from a later version of Affinity.

Do you have the most current version for AP1 (Designer & Photo) 1.10.6.1665 ? I downloaded the file and it opens fine for me.

The above attached "collage.afdesign" file was created with/in Affinity Designer v1.10.5 ! - If you use older versions you have to update your APh und ADe versions accordingly to the latest 1.10.x ones.

Digits after the first "1."  "10." should not to matter when opening the file. I can open it in 1.10.5 for instance.

A file saved in version 1.10 will definitely not open in version 1.8 and below.

Thank you for everyone who took the time to respond.  I have actually just updated to the newer Version 2 of Affinity and the knife tool works a treat.  Thank you and have a good weekend
