Work in mm in Affinity Designer 2.0.3

Recommended Posts

In Affinity Designer 2.03 it is possible to work in mm. For example, it is possible to set the size of a rectangle to 100,5 x 100,5 mm. Unfortunately, it is not possible to set the size to 100,525 x 100,525 mm. Why is that? In CorelDraw it is possible.

I'm still using v1 so can't check, but it has always been possible to set the number of decimal places that are displayed in Preferences. Is this is no longer the case in v2.03?

It is still in V2. Go to Preferences > User Interface and increase the value for Decimal Places

Also note that this affects only the displayed values, so even if you have it set to just 1 decimal place & enter something like 100,525, it actually will use that value, including all 3 decimal places.

Also be aware that this "Decimal Places" unit display preference setting will round down
So even though you may believe your dimension is an integer, reading e.g. "100 mm" in the Transform panel, the actual value can still be 100.049832 if you set your Decimal Places preference for mm to "1"!

You may seriously want to set all your decimal places display to "6" if you want to be in full control.

Plus a note for calculations done within the fields: If you delete the existing value for calculations and enter the calculation formula only, then instead of a possibly rounded value (e.g. from a previous calculation), the mathematically exact value is used for the calculation. This becomes more obvious in calculations with different units where the decimal places have a great effect, e.g. when changing from pt to mm or from mm to cm. … see also:

The display rounds down for values less than 0.5 but rounds up for values greater than that. So for example if you enter 10.51 in a field in the Transform panel with the DP set to 1, it will display as 10.6.

Another trap: existing values are presented rounded. If you try to edit them, change your mind and just pressing enter will use the rounded value and alter the document.

On iPad, the required symbols like = to make exact relative adjustments (-=1.5) are not available / filtered, so you need to edit numbers and get affected by rounding issue.
