Copy non-synced symbols from a previously saved file pastes symbols as if they are unaltered

There is a fatal flaw in the design for Symbols. There currently is no way to recover edited symbols from an older version of a file by pasting them over to a new file. This means that symbols that were edited with the syncing button turned off, are copied in as the regular version of the symbol.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Create an ellipse and turn it into a pie
  2. Convert this ellipse into a symbol
  3. Save the file
  4. Create a copy of the file from step 3
  5. Place another symbol in the file
  6. Disable symbol syncing
  7. Change the angles of the pie for the symbol in step 5 (and optionally scale the symbol down for recognisability)
  8. Copy the edited symbol and paste it into the original file (which didn't have the edited symbol).
  9. Notice how the symbol is brought in and disregards any changes to it

Hi Intous5,

I can't seem to replicate this here following your steps in 2.0.4. Please could you check if this still occurs in our latest version?

Thanks

Hi @Callum

I can still reproduce this.

In this case:

  1. I have created a rectangular symbol
  2. pasted it in a new document
  3. disabled symbol syncing
  4. created an ellipse
  5. moved it into the symbol group
  6. removed the rectangle (basically it no longer has any connection to the old symbol in terms of its content)
  7. pasted it in the original document
  8. notice it is pasted as the original symbol rather than the modified version

Also, when modifying the same shape, this also still happens when you just edit the colour (it creates a new symbol instead).

It only appears to work correctly in 2.0.4 when you modify the base shape:

This is on Windows 10.0.19045. Not sure if I rebooted since the update now that I think about it.

E: Result after shutdown and restart is the same.
